Comics store in Athens, Ohio, gutted by fire

June 28th, 2007
Author Kevin Melrose

Well, this is just awful. The Ohio University Post reports that Universe of Superheroes, the terrific store in Athens, Ohio, where I used to buy my comics, was gutted by fire Sunday.

Owners Tom Green and Todd Grace estimate they lost $100,000 in merchandise. Insurance is expected to cover the $200,000 in damages to the store and the apartments above.

Neighboring businesses have been pitched in to do what they can, with Donkey Coffee and Espresso giving free coffee to store employees while they try to come up with ideas to raise money to replace the lost stock. Luke Potter Photography, located next door, is allowing the comic-store employees to sell salvaged merchandise out of a spare room.

That’s horrible. I loved going to that shop during my “extended tour of duty” at Ohio University. Tom always recommended the best books and was open to ordering/spotlighting anything interesting.

Some clarification is needed. While the community is rallying to support the shop in its time of need, final plans on what to do or WHERE are not set yet. While Luke Potter Photography has been wonderful in lending support with space, lighting and power, the staff don’t want to over burden them, and so, are set up only two days a week in their spare room (garage stall) which worked REALLY well this first week. Next week, assistant manager David Carrero tells me they will be temporarily set up in a bar on 19 S. Court St, as the bar is closed during the day, and the staff there are comic fans also. Meanwhile, the clean-up by staff and volunteers is continuing on a sporatic basis while insurance inspectors continue to investigate how extensive the damage is/was. After the July 4th week, more definate plans will be in place. In the meantime, the staff continues to stock new shipments of book and toys on Wednesdays (they were in the pipeline) and will part with singed graphic novels, toys, cards and other stock for “a donation”. The graphic novels, for example, have darkened spines, but perfect pages, due to how the were packed together in shelving units. So if you don’t mind a discolored or blackened spine, with tight pages, you could get most anything from, say, the last 7 years for a suggested $4 “donation.” (PS: With you paying $4.85 Postal priority shipping, this could be a bargain to pick up that ellusive graphic novel of ANY length for under $9…no matter what the list price was… if you can accept a charred spine! Check it out. As more merchandice is cleared from the old store, more becomes available for this “donation”.) HOPEFULLY, the shop will be back on it’s feet in time for fall!
