Is new Marvel the old DC? Or something.

June 20th, 2007
Author Graeme McMillan

This just in: The Bendis Board in favor of Marvel Comics:

“Is Marvel ripping off DC? with the new skrull invasion/takeover? it sounds ALOT like D.C’s crossover ‘Millennium’”

“Yes, if I were Marvel, I would totally rip-off my less successful and less creative competitor.”

“DC invented alien invasions? Man, Time Warner’s lawyers are gonna be busy.”

“I haven’t read the DC crossover you’re citing as proof of creative espionage and stealing, but Marvel is notorious for having creative summits where their creators just pitch ideas out of the ether and stories grow organically. With such creative guys like Bendis, Brubaker, Straczynski, Loeb, Millar, Slott, Kirkman, ect. all being active participants in these think tanks, I highly doubt Marvel would have a need to resort to such tactics.”

But wait – There’s math!

“Barry Allen in CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS = Captain Marvel’s return, New Norman Osbourne = Lex Luthor, Sentry = take on Superman, Bendis’ Avengers = JLA, Loads of stuff from WATCHMEN and DKR ripped off in CIVIL WAR, (Really nitpicky, but it annoys me) Civil War tagline = Rann/Thanagar War”

I really want to be snarky about clutching at straws here, but I kind of made the same Skrull Invasion = Millennium joke last week

Waitaminute. I thought Bendis was ripping off Battlestar Galactica?

  2. zeb aslam Says:

hold on…I thought Norman Osborn was a crazy businessman type long before Luthor took on that role…or am I misremembering?

  3. Steven Ekstrom Says:

    How does that song go?

“too much time on my hands…”

    *sigh*
    Nothing is original guys…face facts.

  4. Matt M. Says:

Nah, you got it right, Zeb. Luthor didn’t get turned into a businessman until the MAN OF STEEL miniseries or so, circa 1985-1986.

  5. Jake Saint Says:

Marvel should announce and then cancel an ongoing series designed to spin off from the Mystic Arcana one-shots.

  6. Henry Benton Jr Says:

I think when Joe Q first jumped in the arguement was better, but now no.

A better arguement might be Marvel reacting more to DC rather then ripping off.

  7. Alan Coil Says:

Don’t know why you’re having this discussion. Everybody knows that Marvel roolz, DC droolz at the Bendis Boards. Isn’t it obvious that Bendis-is-exclusive-to-Marvel = Mucho-Marvel-butt-kissing?
