In an interview at Richmond.com, The Closer co-star Corey Reynolds reveals that he’s written a script for a Green Lantern movie that he hopes to pitch to Warner Bros.:
I read an interview where you mentioned you are a big comic book fan, and at the time you were very interested in buying the rights to the DC Comics series Green Lantern, and turning it into a big screen adaptation. What’s the status?
It’s funny you mention that. I just finished the script; it is done. I wrote it myself. A motion picture – full-length, full action – and now we are beginning the pitch process. I’m very optimistic. I’ll leave it at that. I think that the people that I have in my camp at Warner Bros. are interested in cultivating some of my creativity.
This is my first time writing a script by myself, from start to finish, and I got the thumbs up from them. As a matter of fact, after they read it they told me that it was, in fact, “ready.” It’s something that I really want to do. I hate to put numbers on things…but I’d like to see a 2010 [release]. It’s three films, and the first one is titled “Green Lantern: Birth of a Hero.”…This would be no small task. This will be a huge undertaking. It’ll be a huge undertaking just to keep myself attached to [be the] star, if the script gets green-lit. But my whole life has been obstacles that a lot of people told me were insurmountable.
And this gives me an excuse to remind everyone that the third season of The Closer debuts tonight at 8 Eastern on TNT.

I’ve never seen Reynolds in anything or watched The Closer but I see no reason why this would not be a good idea.
I wonder (seriously) which Green Lantern Reynolds is writing this about.

He’s writing about John Stewart. Newsarama had a much longer interview with him about this awhile back. The guy is a *huge* comic book fan, exactly the type of guy that comic fans hope to have behind a movie.
I really hope things go well for him.

Nothing against a John Stewart movie, but if there’s going to be a Green Lantern movie, the first one’s gotta be about Hal Jordan, the ORIGINAL Green Lantern.

I’m not a huge follower of DC in general, but Hal Jordan isn’t actually the original Green Lantern, is he? The blonde guy with the really gaudy costume is. Assuming that I’m right, then, it would seem just as legitimate for them to start the Green Lantern movies with John Stewart as the GL instead of Hal. Personally, I’d rather watch a movie about John Stewart, anyway; Hal has always seemed bland to me.

Corey mentions wanting to be Green Lantern in this Closer Webchat at about the 29 minute mark

Actually, Kyra Sedgwick brings it up and the whole cast knows about Corey’s desire to be Green Lantern.
His true desire for a super-power: “the power to stay on the air”.
Full Disclosure: I’m a huge comic book fan, regular Blog@Newsarama reader and I work for TNT.

Corey,
You’re right, I realized, after my post, another Green Lantern existed prior to Hal Jordan - Alan Scott. However, his powers are of different origin than Hal’s, I think it’s magic based. He was the ‘Golden Age’ lantern.

John C. McGinley from ‘Scrubs’ could cameo as Hal. He looks more like Hal Jordan than any other actor.

This could be good but I’d prefer starting with Hal and then do something with John. I’m thinking GLCorps, not just GL. Oh well, I’ll take what I can get.

“Hal has always seemed bland to me.”
You should try reading Emerald Twilight, Rebirth and the current GL book. All good stuff.

@ Kolimar,
I hate to break this to you but John Stewart IS Green Lantern as far as TV viewers, especially kids, are concerned. You can thank the JL cartoons and video games for Stewart’s mainstream popularity.
Besides, if you asked someone on the street “Who is Hal Jordan?, he’ll reply:
“Hal who?” or
“Is that the cousin of NBA legend Michael Jordan?”
So, I think Corey Reynolds going with Stewart as the lead of a GL film makes sense in terms of mainstream recognition as well as artistic license.

whoever said that street creed was an issue is an idiot. You ask anyone who John Stewert is they are gonna say the funny jewish guy not a black superhero. 2nd John Stewert getting pushed into JL cartoon was to appeal to the black demographic.
Makes sense to do that cause the mainstream fans are still gonna watch it no matter this slight diffrence. Just like Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury is not ruffling to many feathers in the upcoming marvel movies.
Yet if you do this on a movie with just GL in it then you will alienate your core fanbase and the movie will bomb.
Why not use Hal as the main protaganist and have major parts for John Stewert and Guy Gardener. I could see the opportunity for great stories developing between thoose two with Hal in the middle. And if you do make multiple ones you could even shift away from Hal as the protaginist and turn it on the two of them in a Emerald twillight type of story line.
