Despite lackluster reviews and lower expectations by box-office analysts, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer cruised to a $57.4 million opening weekend. That beat out the first FF movie, which opened to $56 million in 2005.

Not if you factor inflation in.

Just got back from seeing the movie here in the UK. A lot of fun, if you ask me. I’d watch a third one, if they make it.
A lot of people said the first one was crappy so I skipped it in cinemas, but enjoyed it on DVD… so I decided to make sure I saw this at the flicks.
Go see, don’t let the critics decide for you.

It doesn’t suck.
Well, except for the parts with Julian McMahon. Those suck. But the rest is surprisingly fun.

I liked the movie. It wasn’t anything outstanding, but it was a fun time.

Am I crazy, or was there press assuring us that Galactus is not a cloud a few weeks ago??
June 18th, 2007 at 11:39 am
You’re not crazy. There was a sequence from one of the trailers showing the (very comic book-like) shadow of Galactus falling across a planet.
Plus, there was Avi Arad’s assurance that, “You will see more than a cloud, you will have enough Galactus to rejoice.”

This movie was a lot of fun. I feel like reviewers are coming at these movies (this and Spidey 3) all wrong these days.
June 18th, 2007 at 12:47 pm
Maybe he was talking about the outline you see when surfer goes into the cloud. And I want to see this “shadow”.
June 18th, 2007 at 12:52 pm
Regardless of that ,Galak-tus WAS a cloud, and nothing more.
They coulda put Barney in that sequence an I’d have been happy over the cloud.
June 18th, 2007 at 12:59 pm
Robb, you can read more about the shadow here.
June 18th, 2007 at 1:18 pm
Saw it last night. Galactus was a cloud and a shadow. That’s it.

As Kirby-tastic as the comics Galactus is, would anybody out there want to see a real dude in that suit?
June 18th, 2007 at 1:53 pm
Once I saw the silhouette I decided that Galactus was WITHIN the cloud somewhere and had some awesome gravitational pull
June 18th, 2007 at 1:56 pm
The center of the cloud resembles the head of the Kirby design. I don’t know if everyone took a bathroom break at that part or what, since a lot of people didn’t seem to notice.

Count me one of the people who really enjoyed the movie despite the Galactus controversy. The characterization if the main four and the Surfer was mostly spot on and there was some nice actual sequences.
As for the cloud bit, people who haven’t read the comics are probably at an advantage here. The fact that you can’t see through the cloud to the being inside probably makes Galactus seem more mysterious and scary to the non-fan than having Galactus fully revealed.

The Galactus ending was disappointing because the FF didn’t directly confront him, there was no ultimate nullifier involved, just Reed crying on the ground and giving up. But I heard there will be a Silver Surfer movie so Galactus will probably be more than a cloud in that.
There were good action sequences like when Johnny absorbed everyone’s powers, but I couldn’t stand the corny jokes every minute, or the odd lines like Susan Storm’s “I’m hot for you.”

i loved it! got the same thrill i had when i read the FF comics oh so long ago….i’m really tired of the vengeance themed heroes and thought the family aspect of the FF came through strong in this film….i wholeheartedly recommend it!
June 19th, 2007 at 12:40 am
I enjoyed it too. It could definitely have been done better in some ways but Tim Story’s narrative ability has improved by leaps and bounds since the last movie.
As for the Galactus thing…well, I’m okay with him not being a big purple guy, but I wish the effects they used had not been so reminiscent of “Twister.”
The Surfer was beautifully rendered, though.

@ Stephen:
They’re definitely making an FF3 since FF2′s opening exceeded expectations.

You’re not alone. USA Today credits FF2′s success to the film embracing the family-friendly tone of the comics:

Tim Story is a great example of a filmmaker who knows his target audience (i.e., families).

I know that I am a little bit too late with this comment but here I am to explain few things: Galactus shadow was on Saturn when he passed by and he was inside the cloud, I’m surprised nobody saw his shape, I’m guessing they will revel him completely in the Silver Surfer movie coming soon… As far as the F4-2 goes, I tried to sleep through all the parts without silver surfer, he is the only reason I watched this movie, F4 s**** a** big time…
