Con-tastic Voyage, Day 3

Not a lot of news is coming out of Philadelphia and Charlotte today as Wizard World and HeroesCon wrap up, but plenty of bloggers have posted their thoughts, including Phillip Arthur:

HeroesCon 2007 was, as my friend Matt so aptly put it, “all about the comics”. There were not as many toys and accessories as I am accustomed to seeing, just hundreds upon hundreds of the familiar dingy white comics boxes filling all the tables. While Matt worked feverishly to complete his Squirrel Girl collection, I was only looking for one book: the magnificent Alias: Omnibus, by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos. I have mixed feelings about not finding it; I didn’t have the money to spend on a $100 hardcover, but it is one of the absolute best comic books I have read in years and I very much want to add it to my personal collection. I guess I’ll have to eBay it.

And Jason Wright:

It was a return to the quieter HeroesCon of old. There were no scheduled signings… artists/writers were just at a table whenever they weren’t eating, or at a panel. That’s pretty cool. I got to chat a bit with Peter David, and instantly formed an even higher impression of the man than his books had given me. He managed to sum up in one sentence why I like his writing so much compared to a lot of other Marvel writers. Very cool to meet him in such a casual setting.

And Department H:

I’ve returned from the Philadelphia Comic Convention hosted by Wizard World. The convention had more vendors there than last year which was good, but the size of the convention overall was the same. The artist alley was slightly larger, so if you wanted to get that piece of artwork form that up and cumming artist you had a good chance of buying what might be a valuable piece, if not something to decorate the home or office. I wished the convention had grown in size however, but it seems to be staying the same.

Comic Overload, meanwhile, talks about the various pros he met at HeroesCon, such as Ethan Van Sciver:

Real down to Earth guy, was doing a crap load of sketches for people and even had a copy of Green Lantern: Sinestro Corp out for people to look at. Note: I may have joked that they used that title name as the answer for every question at the DC Panel….well I looked at it..and YEAH….the thing has MASSIVE implications for the DCU and according to a page I looked at specifically, the panel where John Stewart, Guy Gardner, Hal Jordan, and Kyle Rayner are talking…”it’ll be the last time they are all together” I kid you not, these were Ethans’ exact words when I asked him. Feel bad for the guy he’s trying to avoid being type-casted as a villains artist, thus far he’s really been bugging DC staff to do some female characters more. Based on another panel of Sinestro Corp, with Supergirl in it, I’d say Ethan can draw the female figure pretty frelling well. Again cool guy, signed my stuff and I think I got around to wrangling an interview with him later on.

From Saturday, Newsarama big cheese Matt Brady hosted a roundtable of Marvel writers, including Peter David, Jeff Parker, Matt Fraction, Daniel Way and Christos Gage. “I’m kinda an indie guy who has been invited to play in the Marvel super-heroes sandbox in a way I never expected to be able to do,” Fraction said.

Newsarama’s Kevin Huxford reports that Fraction has some wacky ideas for villians for his new series, The Order: One of them is a team of Cold War relics that have been in a state of suspended animation since 1964 and are so sure they’ve been woken up as part of a Soviet first strike on California. Another idea he has come up with is homeless zombies.”

On the good news front, Parker said he hopes to start working on Interman 2 soon.

Comic Book Resources has a report from the Q&A with Heroes‘ Hayden Panettiere, in which she gave hint as to the theme of the second season. “If the first season was ordinary people dealing with extraordinary situations,” she said, “the second is extraordinary people trying to be ordinary again.”
