Remembering Daniel Robert Epstein

June 14th, 2007
Author Chris Mautner

Yesterday’s tragic news about the death of comics journalist (and Newsarama contributor) Daniel Robert Epstein has brought forth a number of touching and notable remembrances from the following:

The Beat
The Comics Reporter
The Engine
Eric Reynolds
(who has a nice rundown of recent interviews, mostly for Suicide Girls)
Film Threat
Suicide Girls
Devin Faraci
Chris Arrant

Comic by Comic

MDM Online
Sean Collins
Mark Millar
Max Evry

Jamie Q at D&Q
Ian Brill and Jesse Thorn
FilmStew

The news hit me like a brick yesterday, and not just because he was only five years younger than me or because I had just been reading his interview with Joe Matt. He was someone whose work I admired and was inspired by, especially when preparing for an interview myself.

Anyone can get on the phone and set up an interview — cartoonists are lonely people who are eager to promote their work. Not everyone can know what to ask once the interview starts. Epstein did.

Note: If you come across any more tributes, let me know in the comments section and I’ll add it to the list.

You said it perfectly with “I admired and was inspired” by his work, please add me to that category.

My thoughts go out to his family and myriad friends.

I don’t know for sure if I’e ever read any of his interviews, but my condolences go out to his family, you, and all appropriate venues for the loss. It’s hard for many geeks to speak without going into raving looney fandom mode; it sounds like he had a talent, and I’m I’ll read more about it today when I read his prior works.

Awful awful news. My condolences to his family.

I had read a few of his interviews on Newsarama (including his most recent) and he was a fantastic interview. He made every piece he wrote flow like a regular conversation, and that’s something you see all too rarely.

A talented writer who will definitely be missed.

  6. Brian Says:

Very nice tribute also on FilmStew.com, where he contributed regularly.
