Although Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer doesn’t open for another two days, The Los Angeles Times reports that 20th Century Fox already has begun developing a spin-off starring the herald of Galactus — with J. Michael Straczynski providing the screenplay.
While the studio went more kid-friendly with the Fantastic Four sequel — it snagged a PG rating — the Surfer solo feature will take a darker route, according to the Times’ “Scriptland” column.
The same item mentions that Layer Cake director Matthew Vaughan is in talks with the studio to helm a Thor movie.

I guess movies are finally trying to simulate the “universe” appeal of comics. Nice.

So, will the SILVER SURFER solo movie feature a Galactus that isn’t a frickin’ cloud?
If his first issue of SILVER SURFER: REQUIEM is anything to go on, it seems JMS has a solid grasp of the Surfer. Here’s hoping Tim Story isn’t tapped to direct…

Maybe the Galactus cloud could transform into diff forms and thats what will appear in the Silver Surfer solo movie….I can only dream.

I’m sure they’d use the Moebius (sp?) story from Epic, but I’d love to see the 90′s story that involved all of the previous heralds (Terrax, Nova, Air-Walker, Firelord) going against the new herald Morg.

Forget Galactus, give me Thanos in the Surfer movie.

This could be good. A darker tone will allow for a better script.

Cool…this can join the Halie Berry Jinx spin-off from Die Another Day in the ranks of pre-hyped movies that never get made

I don’t know, willyd. The character has a following. Hell, Quentin Tarantino script-doctored “Crimson Tide” with a Silver Surfer reference.
Thanos would be a perfect bad guy.

willyd: puhleaze…Michelle Yeow’s character from Tomorrow Never Dies had a never got made spin-off years before Halle Berry.

Well, I certainly hope so. I know JMS gets flack for some of his comics writing, but his grasp of science fiction television has always been amazing, and this sounds up his alley in a way that, say, Spider-Man didn’t.

“Darker.” This gives me new hope.

This is AWESOME!
Finally, a good solid sci-fi writer on a Marvel-film!
Honestly, I’m surprised Marvel hasn’t thought about this already, they’ve got LOADS of great writers, why not have THEM write the scripts for their movies??

Pass.

Will they be giving him a wise-cracking sidekick? Perhaps a chimp or a doe-eyed kid with his hat on backwards? The people who invest in these productions aren’t likely to understand the sort of post-utopian Buddha frame of mind that Stan Lee originally gave him.
Predabot- I agree about using the Marvel writers. I have to wonder if some of the scripts that get produced would pass the editorial standard at Marvel or any other publisher.

You know, I think those “spin-offs that never get made” might be a marketing ploy. In the case of James Bond films, they’re basically the studio’s left-handed way of saying “see, the girls in Bond movies aren’t bimbos! they justify their own movies!” It’s just a theory.
Anyway, if a JMS-surfer movie were ever made, I’d be there!
Saw FF:ROTSS, by the way, and if they maintain the quality of the visual effects for the spin-off, everyone’s in for a real treat!

Paul Greengrass is directing.

In the spin-off, he defeats Galactus with a dehumidifier.

shit yo i hope they make a silver surfer solo movie hes the best hero. and yo, in the movie they made him such a pussy and butchered the story. and if he gets a sidekick it would be pip the troll
