Bully, live from BookExpo America

June 2nd, 2007
Author JK Parkin

Bully, the little comic-blogging bull who believes passionately that Comics Oughta Be Fun!, is at BookExpo America this weekend spreading comic book cheer. His day zero and day one reports are up now.

Bully notes the static he got when entering the DC booth:

I was taking photos in the DC booth when a booming voice called to me: “Hey, no photos of stuffed animals in the booth!” Far from being a tough security guard, it’s actually old pal John Cunningham from DC, and we have a lovely chat for a few moments. I’m jealous of where he works, and we discuss the relative merits of working someplace where you not only get to see all the cool new comics, but also you don’t have to wear a necktie to work. Now that’s a dream job!

He also visited the Marvel booth:

I’ll give Marvel some “much improved” points for giving away The Dark Tower and Anita Blake, not to mention the bookseller-name-recognition of Neil Gaiman with free copies of Eternals #1. But Marvel, you’ve got to learn that giving away copies of Moon Knight #1 and last year’s Free Comic Book Day offering of X-Men/Runaways aren’t going to get you any interest from trade booksellers. And what’s with that giveaway of Civil War: Opening Shot Sketchbook from over a year ago?

No doubt the little bull will have more updates throughout the weekend.

I think it’s unfortunate that the name of Moore’s equal collaborator, Kevin O’Neill, is nowhere to be found on that giant poster of the Black Dossier cover.

By leaving it off, DC is trying to make this seem more like a non-graphic novel.

Hey DC, there is such a thing as a novel written by two people. You could give them equal billing and still play to the book market, you know.

Not to quibble, but notice the Watchmen and V for Vendetta at the bottom of that display. It’s a display marketing Moore’s work.

Yeah I agree, these days writers get all the credit for a good comic. (no such thing as a comic novel – a proper book can never be surpassed in complexity and depth, by some quick imagery. Period)

I don’t suppose there was any information at the DC booth concerning the publication date of the Black Dossier?
