Thanks for the kind words, everybody! (By the way, this post is the No. 1 Google result for "<a href="http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4ADBF_enUS224US224&q=embrace+the+para%2ddig%2dum" rel="nofollow">embrace the para-dig-um</a>"!)

Also, I'm hardly a Spider-Man scholar, but I do remember an old letter-of-comment complaining about the return of the red-and-blue suit. Seems this particular fan thought Spidey's black suit was more in keeping with his "creature of the night" persona. I guess some folks' preferred status quos are a little different than others.... :)

I think Spider-Man somehow has a narrower, more rigid status quo- at heart fans don't want anything too different from the Lee/Ditko formula, whereas Batman has a bit more diversity in his past.

Seems that only Morrison can get away with something like this (i.e., outlandish Batman stories). When Peter David pit Spider-Man against a magical foe (as opposed to a crook in a sci-fi costume), the fans kvetched. Apparently it strained credibility.

I wrote about this in a review of Morrison's Batman, but Geoff Klock explains in his book that Morrison embraces all the contradictions and inconsistencies in a character's continuity while most writers tend to have a very limited view of recent continuity.

And as I explain in my book, Morrison isn't afraid to use the absurd and the supernatural in his own Batman stories.

Anyway, your analysis is excellent, Tom. Nicely done!

I think also that the interesting thing about Morrison's run so far is that his Batman acknowledges the outlandish things in the DCU as opposed to segregating those things away from his "reality" based comfort zone. This makes him more sane in some ways. Not that I'd want the rainbow colored Dick Sprang Bat-suit to come back, as long as it's not corny It'll be ok. :)

Some good thoughts there, Tom. Easily the most even-handed look at Miller's ASBM&R I've seen on-line. I personally don't care for the book as much as Morrison's run, but I think you manage to make a strong case for the validity of Miller's approach.
