Manstream is a dead on description of Marvel and DC’s misogynistic attitude toward superheroines and by extension female readers. On this level The “Big Two” are no different that those who produce and fund woman-hating minstrel rap (a.k.a. gangsta rap).

And like minstrel rappers and record companies, Marvel and DC are freaked out that the critics they’ve long dismissed as getting attention from the mainstream media. They fear that you may soon see Joe Q getting a verbal beatdown on Oprah. (Hey, it’s already happened to minstrel rap mogul Russell Simmons.)

So, keep up the pressure on these guys, and spread the word that the comic Manstream is no longer tolerated.

“Manstream” is supposed to sound unfortunate.
It’s also supposed to be catchy, and descriptive of Big Two superhero culture, which seems to be actively engaged in dismissing female readers and pandering to neadethals.
Yes, it’s name-calling, but the point is to attack attitudes with humor, because being reasonable hasn’t gotten nearly as much attention as it could be.

This cover is fucking horrible. That’s the only word for it.

Such a disappointment, when Tucci’s first few issues attempted to have powerful female characters with a range of body types, etc.

I’m going to write Marvel about this, something I’ve never done before.

In case you’re wondering what’s horrible about it – it’s the sexualized violence. Violence in a sexual context decreases sensitivity to violence toward women.

I’m in no way opposed to sexually charged materials. I’m not a particular fan of violence. But sexualized violence is another matter.

OK, “manstream” sounds kind of corny to me too (it also has all sorts of probably unwanted physiological connotations), but to say you can’t take that person seriously and to compare a grown women to a child? how does it undermine her viewpoint? its not like she said “slavery is bad” while owning slaves. i don’t want to make too much out of it, it just seems unproductive to dismiss someone because they used a word you don’t particularly like. especially when it brings up a good point, that “mainstream” comics include demeaning depictions of women that wouldn’t really fly in a lot of mainstream culture. actually, although i find this point interesting, i’m not sure i agree, especially given the greater influence of porn subtexts in mainstream advertising, etc. enough from me, i just wanted to chime in to say its an interesting concept.

I can’t take anyone seriously who uses the word “manstream”. I’m sorry that’s a 3rd grade level thing and it’s sad to see a grown adult come up with such a childish term and be proud of it.

I’m glad people are having very vocal, intelligent conversations on this subject…in college I knew of a couple kids who stuck just to indys because of mainstream comics not “[realizing] that the money they make by pandering to the lowest common denominator isn’t as much as they lose by alienating existing and potential customers and creating a negative view of their product in the wider culture.”

You can have the “sexy,” without these undertones, artists like Bryan Hitch or Frank Quitely do this on a (sorta) monthly basis.
