Great Snakes! It’s Herge’s 100th!

Tintin

Herge, creator of Tintin, would have been 100 years old today. In honor of his centennial anniversary, the blogosphere is rolling out the red carpet. Tom Spurgeon has a nice round-up of links, as does Dirk. Of special note is Mattias Wivel’s “appreciation/conversation,” this Associated Press article, and this Time Magazine piece. Then there’s this FilmStew piece on why the upcoming Steven Spielberg/Peter Jackson film won’t feature any love interest for the boy reporter:

Indiana Jones had Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen); Luke Skywalker had Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher). But there will be no honey bunny for Tintin in the first of three motion capture animation films now being planned for 2009 release by the formidable tandem of Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg.

This according to an anonymous Moulinsart estate company source quoted in London’s The Times newspaper. Says he or she: “I’m sure the accountants in Hollywood would love some of that in there, but they can’t do it. We have approval over that just to make sure they don’t totally ruin it . . . But there is room for some artistic license.”

I plan on celebrating the day by leafing through my dog-eared copy of “Tintin in Tibet,” hopefully with my five-year-old daughter, who’s just recently taken an interest in Herge’s books. I hope you have the chance to do likewise.

I messed it all up today. I bought two ASTERIX books, instead. Whoops!

But I do have a TIN TIN book I can dig out. Maybe I’ll look into that this week. I have to support my Belgian heritage, after all!
