If it’s Tuesday, that must mean Chris Mautner and I are back for another look at the titles scheduled to appear this week at a comics store near you.

With Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer just a few weeks away, Marvel boosts the profile of the herald of Galactus with the Silver Surfer Omnibus, Vol. 1, hardcover, Marvel Spotlight: Fantastic Four, and a guest appearance in Fantastic Four #546.

At Image, Casanova and Fell get the hardcover treatment, while at DC the big story’s still Countdown, which ticks down to Issue 49.

Kevin: As often as not, the idea of John Constantine is far better than his actual depiction. Largely because of that, I’ve only sporadically read Hellblazer over the past few years, buying an issue here and there to test the murky waters. But when it was announced Andy Diggle would be the new writer, I figured I’d give everyone’s favorite chain-smoking magician another try — and I’m so glad I did. Diggle and Leonardo Manco’s opening storyline — a two-parter, not one of those sprawling written-for-the-trade tales — was wonderfully clever and creepy and low-key. Everything I look for in a Hellblazer comic. And now the second storyline — another two-parter! — promises to be just as enthralling, sending Constantine to a casino. I’m so looking forward to this that I’ll go ahead and call it my pick of the week.

Kevin: I’ve repeatedly kicked myself for not picking up Jason Aaron and Cameron Stewart’s critically acclaimed miniseries set during the Vietnam War, so here’s my chance to make up for that.

JAN071924 CASANOVA VOL 1 LUXURIA HC (MR) $24.99

Chris: Pick of the week. The first story arc of Matt Fraction and Gabriel Ba’s dense, heady super-spy/family drama is lovingly collected in this $25 hardcover. It’s a wonderful blend of genres and sly asides, yet never once comes off as false or too hip for the room. In fact, it’s even quite moving at times. If you haven’t been collecting the series, do yourself a favor and pick up the trade.

JAN071935 GODLAND #18 $2.99

Chris: Normally the constant back and forth between utter sincerity and tongue-in-cheek sarcasm would deflate any other comic. Not to mention the whole Jack Kirby pastiche thing. Yet somehow Casey and Scioli manage to make Godland work, and work well. I’ll definitely be picking this up on Wednesday.

Chris: I’ve heard good things about this Warren Ellis series, the first in the “low-priced but dense read” series of comics from Image. Enough to at least convince me to leaf through the book while I’m at the store.

MAR072131 CRIMINAL #6 (MR) $2.99

Chris: Another ongoing series I’m addicted to. This issue sees the start of a new storyline, one only tangentially related to the previous one. The first arc was so strong, however, that it’s hard to imagine the quality would drop off any time soon. Brubaker and Phillips have proven themselves to be an ideal team, at least as far as crime noir is concerned.

Kevin: After being subjected to repeated abuse and misuse — Deus ex machina! Doctor Strange explains it all! — the Master of the Mystic Arts finally gets the series he deserves. Even if it was only a miniseries. Oh, Stephen Strange, why can’t Brian K. Vaughan write all of your adventures?

Kevin: I realize I probably mention this series at least once a month, but I make no apologies. It’s that good — and that fun. Now if Marvel would only tell us who, if anyone, it’s naming to replace Sean McKeever.

Kevin: Whenever someone asks me to recommend manga, Harold Sakuishi’s series about a neurotic teen-ager, a rock band and a freaky dog named Beck is always somewhere near the top of the list. It’s highly addictive.

Kevin: I got this in the mail yesterday, so I’ve done little more than flip through it. But the buzz on Matt Silady’s graphic novel has been good, and the art looks promising. Plus, I’m a sucker for the cover design.

Chris: Joann Sfar’s wonderful collection of stories about family and religion sees paperback release. The plot involves a cat that learns to talk, thereby making its master’s life much more complicated. That’s not really what the book’s about, though. It’s really about the quest for God, the ways that our children follow divergent paths from our own, and the role tradition plays in our lives. It’s an utterly marvelous book and I recommend you purchase it if you missed the hardcover edition.

Chris: I’ve been enjoying this series, a huge middle finger to the otaku culture, quite a bit. The last volume hinted at a possible redemption for the lead, hopeless shut-in Satou, who is torn between attempting a normal life and making a porn game with his equally nerdy next-door neighbor. I’m hoping the savage satire continues for at least a few more volumes before said redemption occurs, however.
