Virgin to close Megastores in Chicago, Salt Lake City

Knowing some of you are still mourning the demise of Tower Records — one of the first places outside a comic book store you’d ever see graphic novels racked alongside mainstream fiction — I’m very sorry to report two of the 13 Virgin Megastores left in America will soon bite the dust too, according to Saturday’s Chicago Tribune.

With locations closing in Chicago and Salt Lake City, the Virgin Megastore death toll has reached seven stores in the past year (even as company founder Richard Branson’s Virgin Airlines received federal approval to offer domestic flights in America).

Is the consumer push toward digital music outlets like eMusic, iTunes and Amazon also shuttering another plum venue for graphic novels? Perhaps…
