If you’ve seen Gulliermo del Toro’s brilliant Pan’s Labyrinth in a theater and — like me — were wanting more, you’ll want to splurge on the two-disk set, filled to the brim with extras.
One group features animated DVD comics (one-page stories with floating captions), beautifully illustrated by Guy Davis, Jason Shawn Alexander and Mike Kaluta, that provide interesting back stories to the mythical characters Ofelia encounters in the labyrinth: The Faun and Great Toad (Davis), Pan (Kaluta) and The Fairies (Alexander). And, Davis contributed some sketches to one of the DVD featurettes on The Power of Myth.
Also of note among the DVD extras: An hour-long Charlie Rose interview with del Toro and his best film-making friends Alejandro González Iñárritu (Babel) and Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men). Evidently, their very-unusual -for-Hollyweird, Three Musketeers-like comraderie and the quality of their films is paying off: Universal Pictures announced a $100 million agreement with the trio Saturday to produce and distribute their films under the Cha Cha Cha banner.

Pan’s Labyrinth is a stunningly powerful and enchanting movie. Even with all the critical acclaim, this modern masterpiece is still underrated. This film ranks with the finest ever made of any genre.
