Tom reported yesterday that Cold Heat, the Picturebox-published pamphlet series by Frank Sotoro, Ben Jones and Tim Hodler, will end its run with the fourth issue. Those who have been following the series need not fear, however. The entire story will be collected into one 200-page plus trade volume, to be published in 2008.
Readers may recall Cold Heat was set as an example of the dangers of Diamond’s distribution monopoly last year when Picturebox publisher Dan Nadel complained it and several other Picturebox comics were rejected for not being up to “comic book industry standards.”
I’m disappointed but not terribly surprised by the news. In many ways its just another example of the growing movement away from pamphlets towards to trades. No doubt many retailers and readers had trouble getting past the loose art style and bright neon color palette to check out what I regarded as an artful play on some rather familiar genre tropes.
