Heroes art by Tim Sale

When (SPOILERS!) prophetic artist Isaac Mendez was murdered in the April 23 episode of Heroes, the first thing I thought was, “Does that mean Tim Sale is out of a job?”

Well, this Chicago Tribune profile of Sale, who with colorist Dave Stewart provides the paintings for the NBC series, answers that question: No.

“I know I have a job next year,” says Sale, who (I didn’t realize) also ghosts for Peter Petrelli on the show.

All of his Heroes artwork is colored by Dave Stewart. They work together on DC Comics’ Superman: Confidential. For his TV work, Sale works with ink and charcoal to produce a piece in black, white and grays. He scans it and sends a digital file to Stewart, who colors it and sends that file to NBC. NBC blows it up and prints it — so there’s no actual canvas painted by anyone.

In other Heroes-related news, actor Masi Oka (Hiro) appeared Tuesday on the Late Show With David Letterman, delivering the “Top Ten Surprises in the Heroes Season Finale.” You can watch the video here.
