The Bendis Board considers what the worst thing to happen to a comic book character would be:

“Pumpkin rape.”

“Crisis… First you have Countdown to Infinite Crisis, then you have sixty eleventybillion miniseries before the Crisis miniseries and then you have a retcon punch that just f***s up everything and then you have a jump a year ahead deal and then a weekly series that tells you what went on, sort of, during that year, and now you’re counting down… AGAIN!!! WTF?”

“[K]illing a character, bringing them back, killing them etc. The reason I say this, is that Marvel has basically made a joke out of Jean Grey due to this, and also because, let’s face it, nobody takes a death in a Marvel or DC comic seriously anymore.”

“shitty stories. that’s the worst thing that could ever happen in comics. and then people thinking that shitty, sub-par, or even average stories are great.”

“I’ll pick giving a character kids. It may sound like a cute idea in theory, but on the long run, it’s only a pain in the ass for writers and editors to deal with. Not worth it.”

“I think that the worst thing that can happen in a pre-existing series is being told that the story you may have read (a year ago or a week ago) never happened. Your purchase has been invalidated. Now if a comic wants to tell me that more stuff happened ‘right after I left’ or thought the story was ended or that other things were going on during the content that we were not privy to until right now, that’s one thing. I’ll even take the revelation that a character was perhaps not who we thought it was. I’ve read a lot of crazy things in my time and due to that I’m very flexible. I just don’t like being told that what I bought didn’t happen for no good reason. I’m a Legion fan so I’ve been having a difficult time since the Titans/ Legion one shot where I lost the Zero Hour Legion I loved so much. Now Justice League is telling me something else entirely. But I loved those comics and still do despite their apparent invalidation now.”
