A daughter who still loves Little Lulu comics and ham sandwiches from her mom…

May 16th, 2007
Author Wayne Beamer

I know this a little late for Mother’s Day, but, if you have any heart at all, you’ll enjoy reading this first-person essay from Carolee Kaufold for the Student Operated Press about her I Heart Comics experience with Little Lulu and ham sandwiches.

Carolee’s mom may not have been the most demonstrative parent in the world, but the daughter always knew she count on her mom for support in other many ways besides a warm hug and a kiss. Like holding Carolee’s hand in a darkened movie theater, or calling home every day like clockwork to check up on her. Or, the time when Mom treated her 10-year-old daughter’s stomach ache with comfort food — a ham sandwich with tomatoes — and a Little Lulu comic.

After reading this essay, I bet many of you will recall comics-and-comfort times like those from your youth too, particularly, if your parents aren’t around anymore…
