Is it Tuesday again already? If so, that means Chris Mautner and I return for another crack at the titles set to appear this week in a comics store near you.

The “big” releases this week aren’t the kickoff of the next big event. Instead, they’re the long-awaited — and I mean long-awaited – continuation of Frank Miller and Jim Lee’s All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder and the conclusion of Mark Millar and Bryan Hitch’s The Ultimates 2. There’s a little more on those titles after the jump.

Also at DC, the Minx line of graphic novels for teen girls launches with Cecil Castellucci and Jim Rugg’s The Plain Janes, while Marvel marches on with its Civil War tie-in collections.

Meanwhile, the KISS Nation braces for the release of the KISS 4K Destroyer Edition #1, which at 2 1/2 feet tall by 1 1/2 wide, apparently is the largest comic book ever published. Evarrrrr. So says Guinness.

Me, I just want to see the KISS Nation take on the Naruto Nation. That would be the fight of the century!

Kevin: How strange is it that, after a seemingly endless delay, both of these chronically late titles ship the same week? For those keeping score at home: All-Star Batman and Robin #4 was released in May 2006, while The Ultimates 2 #12 came out in September. Yeah, they’re that late. MAR070229 LEGION OF SUPER HEROES IN THE 31ST CENTURY #2 $2.25

Kevin: Despite it having one of the longer titles in comicdom, I enjoyed the first issue of this series, based on the TV cartoon that, in turn, is based on a comic. It didn’t blow me away — it was a simple retelling of the cartoon’s first episode — but the combination of J. Torres’ writing and Chynna Clugston-Flores’ art made it a fun read.

Chris: And with this, the Minx imprint is officially launched. Karen Berger and company picked a good choice for their opening salvo, as The Plain Janes is a charming, winsome book about a group of girls (all named Jane, of course) who declare acts of artistic terrorism (and I’m using the term very loosely here) upon their suburban hometown. It fits well within the literary tradition of many young adult novels, and I can easily see a lot of young girls (and even some guys) wishing they could be like the Janes. And I’d say that even if author Cecil Castellucci wasn’t guest blogging at Blog@ this month and is probably reading this right now. (Hi, Cecil!)

Kevin: Although I’m a big fan of Ted Naifeh, and I loved the first Death Jr. miniseries, I have to admit this second volume dropped off my radar. I have the first two issues, but there seems to have been a delay with the release of this final installment. I’m pretty sure I didn’t order it.

Kevin: There’s so much bad epic fantasy out there — in comics and in prose — in which the creators are so enamored with Tolkien-lite world-building that they never get around to an actual plot, or engaging characters, or decent art. Thankfully, Mark Smylie isn’t one of those creators. His Artesia series is epic, to be sure, with magic, mythology, and massive battles between rival kingdoms. But it’s also an engaging, complex and often bloody tale about the literal and metaphorical journey of the title character, Artesia. And Smylie’s painted pages are gorgeous. Although I have the trade paperback, the hardcover comes this close to being my pick of the week.

Chris: I can have more than one pick of the week, right? Well, sorry, I’m picking these two anyway, so nyeah. With this one-two punch, Fantagraphics pretty much owns this week, at least where sheer quality is concerned.

The first book collects the first three issues of Ivan Brunetti’s classic comic book Schizo into one loving hardcover, plus assorted early work and strips. It’s utter, bleak misanthropy and bottom of the barrel self-loathing at it’s hilarious best.

The second book collects a number of comics by Walt Holcolmbe, including all four issues of his much-lamented Poot. Holcolmbe was one of those folks who, for one inexplicable reason or another, never seemed to catch on. I’ve been eagerly waiting for Fantagraphics to pull his comics together in one book. Here’s hoping it creates a resurgence in his work. We need more comics from this man.

Kevin: Last year’s surprise success, David Petersen’s initial six-issue Mouse Guard series gets released as a 192-page hardcover, which should do well in the book market. The story itself isn’t anything extraordinary — anthropomorphic mouse-soldiers in a pseudo-medieval setting uncover a sinister plot while protecting their territory — but Petersen’s earnestness, and his beautifully painted art, really sell the tale. Although I have all six issues, I’m really looking forward to sitting down with the hardcover. This is my pick of the week.
