Rumor mill: The Rock as Marvel … or Black Adam?

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson

IESB.net and Ain’t It Cool report on a visit to the set of Get Smart, where wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson confirms he’s talked with director Pete Segal about a role in the planned Shazam movie.

The question is, which role?

When asked by IESB whether Segal had spoken to him about playing Captain Marvel, Johnson replied: “Yeah, he did. Listen, John August is writing the script and he’s a tremendous writer, and I’ll just wait for the script to come in. But I’d love to work with Pete again, and certainly would want to work with John August. So there’s a strong possibility.”

But when Johnson met with a contributor to Ain’t It Cool, discussion drifted from Captain Marvel to Black Adam.

“Which one do you think is a good fit for me?” Johnson asked.

Ain’t It Cool staple Moriarty, who comes off as a little star-struck, writes: “Look, standing face to face with Dwayne Johnson, the guy is the right choice for either role. He’d make a killer bad guy, having fun with it, and he’s certainly got the look to pull off Black Adam. But there’s also a decency to him that’s almost immediate when you’re talking to him, this open quality. I told him what it is that has always made Captain Marvel such an interesting character in my opinion.”

Screenwriter August, who was quick to stomp earlier Jake Gyllenhaal casting rumors, hasn’t mentioned Johnson on his blog. Yet.

    Ooooh, tough one.

    Black Adam. No question.

The Rock is damn likeable, but in a suave way that doesn’t scream Captain Marvel.

He can get people to boo him as easily as cheer him and he looks like Black Adam.

He looks better in black really.

    The Rock for Black Adam!

  4. Matthew Craig Says:

There’s nothing to say that Black Adam can’t have a shred of decency, is there? To give the “baddie” a second dimension?

And is Brendan Fraser dead or something? Why isn’t he in the running for Captain Marvel?

The Rock actually has the physique to play a superhero! Imagine that! He would be perfect as Black Adam. Captain Marvel is a very white character, so The Rock wouldn’t work in that role. But Black Adam has that darker skin tone, so it’s a perfect match!

  6. Ben Morse Says:

I neglected to mention this before, but I do believe the Rock would still give Black Adam that “shred of decency,” he’d just do it while being the cocky jerk we’d love to hate ;)

I’ve gotta say he really looks like Black Adam.

  8. Mark Engblom Says:

Black Adam, of course! The build, the complexion, the hairline. All he needs now is a costume and pointy ears!

  9. Mel Valentin Says:

I’m all for Johnson in either role, but I can see what he’s a better physical fit for Black Adam. Let’s leave the pointy ears out of it, though. Works in the comic book, but I don’t see how it’d work on the big screen without making him look like a Vulcan and confuse audiences unfamiliar with the Captain Marvel mythos.

  10. Skyhawk Says:

He pulled off the Scorpion King ok, so I think he do Black Adam justice. A years ago I’ve rooted for Arnold Vosloo.

  11. Chris Says:

    Black Adam would be awesome!

  12. Mark Engblom Says:

From the photo above, he already has vaguely pointy looking ears….so that’s probably enough. As for people confusing him with a Vulcan…I don’t think that’s too likely.

  13. RMC Says:

On reflection, I think He should play Captain Marvel. It would make a nice change and he’d take to the role like a duck to water. Superman Returns was so solemn, I reckon The Rock could bring some nice irony to the Big Red Cheese
