Next week the networks announce their fall seasons, and either I’ll be jumping for joy because Veronca Mars will be back, or I’ll be cursing The CW like Graeme most likely is right now about Gilmore Girls.
Usually you can guess what kinds of shows the networks will run with based on what was popular the year before … remember the game show blitz that followed Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Or the reality show frenzy when Survivor hit it big?
The Associated Press has a story out about what to expect next season as the networks make up their minds about what they’ll add … despite the quick death of serial dramas like The Nine, Drive and Day Break, the success of Heroes will likely bring more … just not as many:
We’re going to see fewer than last year because networks copy what works and shy away from what doesn’t,” said analyst Steve Sternberg of ad-buying firm Magna Global.
“It always has to do with what was the success the most recent year,” agreed Bill Carroll of ad-buyer Katz Television. “So we’re going to see things that either have a crime fighter, a superhero or the supernatural.”
Man, I really liked Drive. But I digress …
Some of the shows the networks are considering include:
–Pushing Daisies, about a guy who can bring the dead back to life
–The Sarah Connor Chronicles, a spin-off from the Terminator films
–The Bionic Woman, a remake of the 1970s show
–Them, based on the graphic novel Six
–Babylon Fields, a drama featuring zombies
–Viva Laughlin, a musical mystery series with Hugh Jackman (WTF?)

re: Viva Laughlin — Hugh Jackman is one of the producers and only appears in the pilot episode. IF “Viva Laughlin” becomes a series, Jackman might do a guest shot if he can fit it into his busy movie schedule, but it’s unlikely. (By the way, it’s based on the hit British series “Blackpool”)
