Continuing their ongoing love affair with the alt-comix crowd, The New Yorker has another swell cover by Ivan Brunetti, who also happens to have a new book out from Fantagraphics this month, Misery Loves Comedy. The splendid, hopelessly bleak volume collects all three issues of Schizo plus other gag strips and oddities. Apparently the Fantagraphics book store will be having an exhibit of his work this month, complete with reception and author signing, so if you happen to be in the Seattle area then you might want to check it out. It’s hard to imagine a more hilarious, disturbingly bleak book ever seeing the light of day.
Also in this issue of The New Yorker: Anthony Lane reviews Spider-Man 3 (Surprise! He didn’t like it.) and there are at least three, no four, really funny cartoons that are NOT by Roz Chast. Will wonders never cease.
By the way, did you know that the magazine is now putting animated cartoons up on their Web site? I sure didn’t.

Not that I don’t love the Brunetti covers, ‘cuz I do, but I’m surprised this one has come so quickly on the heels of the other. Wasn’t it back in winter? Two within six months is awesome. I wish Tomine would go back to doing more illos inside (or more covers), but maybe they’re going for something much, much more cartoony?

I thought it was rather funny that one of the cartoons, “absolute rubbish,” actually seemed to be *about* TNY’s film review strategy.
