The New York Public Library has released “Books For the Teen Age,” its extensive annual list of recommended reading of teen-agers.
The 2007 booklist includes at least 37 graphic novels — there may be more, but several of the titles are scattered throughout different categories and I may have overlooked a few — from as diverse publishers as ADV Manga, AiT/PlanetLar, DC Comics, Del Rey, First Second, Hill and Wang and Tokyopop.
The titles, too, are diverse, ranging from Fun Home and The Life of Pope John Paul II to Dragon Head and Demo to Making Comics and Graphic Novels.
The full list of titles follows after the jump. If I’ve missed any, please let me know in the comments and I’ll add them.

Malcolm X: A Graphic Biography, by Andrew Helfer and Randy DuBurke (Hill and Wang/Serious Comics) was pretty bad. It did nothing to add to the story by using the graphic format to tell a story. You’re just better off reading the Autobiography.
Too bad garage Band wasn’t on the list.

I’m pretty sure that I have never heard of any of those except the Malcolm X book. I guess I’m out of touch with teens (and I’m only 23)!
