Sasquatch week, day three … today Viper’s Jessie Garza talks to Otis Frampton, who contributed the story “Smallfoot” to the anthology. Frampton’s the creator of Oddly Normal, the first volume of which is available in trade paperback, with a second volume due to start next month.
Jessie and Otis, the stage is yours …
Garza: How did you want the sasquatch in your story to look and why?
Frampton: I could tell you, but it would ruin the myster/premise of my story. So I just say that the look and design of the sasquatch in my story is eactly as I envisioned it to match the tale I had to tell. Worst interview answer in the history of journalism!
Garza: As a creator, do you have more sasquatch stories to tell outside of the anthology?
Frampton: Outside of this or future anthologies that Viper puts out on the subject? No. But if I had to come up with one for a project, I’m sure that I could. When Josh
asked me to be a part of this book, the idea came to me within about a minute of saying I was “in.” So Josh, if you’re reading, whenever volume 2 comes around, my brain is ready to spit out another one for you.
Garza: Why do you think the sasquatch and all its many varieties are so interesting to people?
Frampton: I think people enjoy thinking that there is some secret, hidden world out there because real life can be so mundane at times. People want to believe that there are things that exist beyond our comprehension and the “sasquatch” is one of them, especially since the idea of a creature like that seems so plausible. I’m more of a pragmatist on subjects like cryptozoology … if there really were a sasquach out there, I think we would have found one by now. But it’s a subject that is fun to play with in the world of fiction.
Garza: Have you ever seen a sasquatch?
Frampton: Whenever I look in the mirror lately, I see one. I’ve got multiple projects going on right now with deadlines all converging at once, so I’m in “sasquatch mode” as we speak. No shaving or trips to the barber for me when there’s work to be done.
Garza: If you had a sasquatch, what would it’s name be? And why?
Frampton: Phil. Because I say so.
