If you thought Jeff Albertson, aka The Comic Book Guy who runs The Android’s Dungeon & Baseball Card Shop in The Simpsons’ mythical home of Springfield, was the most famous comic book fan of them all, I stumbled across a factoid about a real life somebody mentioned yesterday in The Guardian Unlimited who might take issue with that assumption.
Try chessmaster extraordinaire Bobby Fischer, as described in the new book, Kings of New York by Michael Weinreb. From the Guardian review: “It was Fischer who defeated Boris Spassky in Iceland in the sporting contest that more than any other symbolised the Cold War. A comic-book genius who only read comic books, he became world champion and promptly retired.”
