“For the life of me, I’ll never believe a title that boasted a creative team of Simonson and Chaykin for a new direction stunk up the racks - and partially in my collection - so badly. It really disappointed me after so many good stories from Johns, Rags, Palmiotti & Gray, Sook, Bennett that I had to drop it after that terrible ‘launch’ story that Walt and Howard did for their Hawkgirl run.”
“I’m actually quite surprised how long they held out on pulling the plug on this book, I really am.”"Myself as well. I was expecting this announcement at least six months ago. Nobody I know who read the book went more then a few issues before dropping it.”
“I’m shocked, I tell you, shocked! Oh, wait, no I’m not. I’ve been expecting this since issue 52 (what can I say, I’m an optimist).”
“Waste of a book, they went the wrong direction with it. I dropped it about 5 issues ago, along with Flash and Aquaman.”
“I stopped reading this pretty soon after OYL. I am a HUGE Hawkfan, but really very little would have brought me back to this book at this point.”
“By no means am I shocked that it is being cancelled based on how poor of a job they executed it but they really could have had a great book if they had put any effort in.”
Walt Simonson, I still love you.

For an earlier version…

The depressing part of Hawkgirl getting canceled is that now people will continue to believe she can’t support a book on her own. I think Kendra is a great character and could easily support her own book with the right team. As great as they are, that team isn’t Simonson and Chaykin. Not because they suck, just because it’s a mismatch.
Alas.

Can we give credit where credit is due: the art was passable while the writing was beyond insipid.

I love it when Walt Simonson does writing and art (Orion, Thor), but when it’s just writing (Hawkgirl, Wonder Woman) something seems off.

The problem in general is a glut of unncessary titles of B-List characters. The attempt is admirable, but readership tends to waver. Aquaman, Hawkgirl, Green Lantern Corps, Ion, Supergirl to name a few. Is it really that hard to turn them to back-up features. Remember when Green Lantern had the last few pages for Tales of the Corps.? Supergirl could be added on to a Superman title, Hawkgirl to JSA etc.

That’s a great idea (short backups). Especially if they had complete stories … that might offset the “part 1 of 6″ tendency and make the individual issues seem worthwhile … of course then your basic 6-issue story would be spread out over 8 issues.
I was turned off from this comic by Howard Chaykin’s artwork - I think he was drawing a different title: “Hawkgirl’s Breasts, Featuring Her Permanently Erect Nipples”

I knew this book was a goner the when I saw the cover with the giant fanged vagina. I don’t know what DC was thinking.

I have always liked HAWKMAN. When it shifted to Hawkgirl, DC looked desperate. Another top-heavy babe going to war…
The dream team of Simonson/ Chaykin hooked me in, but they never clicked. Chaykin has always been a pretty extreme artist, but drawing The Maw as a fanged vagina seems over-the-top, even for him. Yeah, the Simonson stories stank. Hawkman died when G.Johns left.
I hope Hawkman can get back in the game. While he’s relatively underpowered, I’d take his 4000yrs of fighting experience over Batman. Maybe he can go to Khandaq and be Black Adam’s Esteemed Visitor in Residence?
