Lots of media coverage and initial reactions are coming in on Spider-Man 3, which had its worldwide debut earlier today in Tokyo:
Tokyo movie fans were rewarded Monday with the gala world premiere of the newest Spiderman movie, the third installment in the blockbuster franchise based on the comic-book hero. Hundreds of fans screamed as a Spiderman appeared on the ceiling of the fashionable Roppongi Hills shopping and arts complex and crawled onstage onto the red carpet. All cellphones went up as the fans tried to take pictures of the character in action.
“Japan has been a great supporter of Spiderman,” said star Tobey Maguire in explaining the choice of Tokyo for the premiere during his sixth trip to Japan.
Actress Kirsten Dunst, who plays Mary Jane Watson in the films, accompanied Maguire to the premiere and expressed excitement at the warm welcome by the Japanese fans.
TV Guide already has some initial thoughts about the film up on its Web site:
Spider-Man 3″ is packed with stunning special effects such as the crumbling, morphing Sandman and an evil black suit with a life of its own that brings out a person’s dark side, but the characters also show a complexity rarely seen in action movies.
Ain’t It Cool News also has reviews of the film, which opens May 4.

Spider-Man’s an interesting character because he’s so much more than just Spider-Man; there’s a big emphasis on Peter Parker, which the movies have nailed.
So it doesn’t surprise me that TV Guide sees a “complexity rarely seen in action movies.”

I’d be biting my nails if I didn’t hate nailbiters.
