Variety reports that Hideo Nakata (Ringu, Kaidan) will direct L, a spinoff of the hit Death Note movies, which are based on the manga by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata.

Kenichi Matsuyama will return as the eccentric, sweets-loving detective L for the prequel to the two Death Note films, which earned a combined $67 million last year in Japan.

Warner Japan plans to release L in early 2008.

death note would’ve been better if L didn’t die…i noticed that the ones who watched the manga first is mostly on Light’s side…while the ones who watched the movie first is mostly on L’s side..but L is more mature though childish than Light is…remember that with great power comes great responsibility…L is so GOOD(like an angel) to burn the death note..that ends everything…including his life…:-(
