So now we know where the idea for “Cave-In” came from

The Jeffersonian talks to “Day Break” cartoonist Brian Ralph. I particularily like the description of the Fort Thunder scene:

Yet, when he graduated in 1996 with a bachelor of fine arts degree in illustration, he set out to be a freelance illustrator. He lived in a low-rent warehouse in Providence, R.I., with several other artists.

“It was really a pretty nasty place,” Ralph said.

At night, he would bundle up in a sleeping bag and make a “fort” around himself using whatever he could find to keep “critters” away. But the low rent meant he didn’t have to get a job and was free to develop his own illustration style and unique characters.

“It was the best of times; it was the worst of times,” he joked. “It’s kind of like going to grad school, but free.”
