Will work for food … or free stuff

April 10th, 2007
Author JK Parkin

On his blog, C.B. Cebulski announces that he’s running a contest related to the first issue of Loners, which is due in stores tomorrow:

Well, they say that writers should write what they know, and I like to think I know food… so when I write comics I toss in little references to certain meals and restaurants I enjoy. I try and squeeze a few quick nods into my books whenever I can. And Loners #1 is no exception! Contrary to popular belief, Los Angeles has some excellent eateries and as that’s where Loners takes place, you’ll see some of my favorite LA restaurants popping up in the book every now and again.

When you read issue one, on sale April 11th, you’ll notice I clearly name drop my beloved In-N-Out Burger in there. That’s a constant in the entire series actually. However, there’s also a subtle tribute somewhere in the first issue to another one of my favorite L.A. hangouts.

So what I’m doing is running a LONERS FOOD FIND contest. I’m offering a free pile of swag to the first five people who can correctly identify the other restaurant referenced in our debut issue. Come Wednesday, the first five people who BUY THE ISSUE, which you will be asked to prove, and e-mail me the name of the joint in question, will get an envelope stuffed with all kinds of signed comics and goodies, with a few extra surprises thrown in to boot! Sound good? I’m at cbcebulski@gmail.com.

I’m right there with C.B. on In-N-Out Burger … I wonder if the Loners are aware of In-N-Out’s secret menu; I highly recommend the Neapolitan shake.

Julie Power loves the secret menu at In-N-Out, as you’ll see in Loners #4!!

    Thanks for the support!

    Take care,
    C.B.

Bah! Fatburger is clearly superior to In’n'Out in terms of California-based hamburger chains, if for no other reason than that they have steak fries as well as a good cooked to order with good toppings burger.

Good to know about the Secret Menu. Have to keep a copy in my wallet for Comic Con in San Diego: there’s an In-N-Out right off the San Ysidro trolley line. Last visit, I noticed the company printed on their fry bags a chapter and verse notation from the Bible. We check it out in the hotel’s Gideon, but don’t remember the exact quote. Anybody know what that’s about?

Per the wikipedia entry, the Bible verses were added in the 1980s: “The practice began in the 1980s during Rich Snyder’s presidency, a reflection of the Christian beliefs held by the Snyder family.” Info on the verses can be found over on wikipedia as well.

Never been to Fatburger, Tom … where’s the closest one to Mountain View?

  6. C.B. Cebulski Says:

Sad thing is, I’ve never been to Fatburger either. I hear nothing but wonderful things about it, but whenever burgers come up, we’re always off to In-N-Out. Next time… I did try Tommy’s on the last trip, on Dan Slott’s recommendation actually, and didn’t find it as good as I’d been lead to believe. However, to be fair, I didn’t go to the Original Tommy’s which I’m told is far, far superior to the other franchises. So I have to go there again now too. Oh, well… no price is too high to pay for good burgers!

    Take care,
    C.B.

Alas, there aren’t any Fatburgers in the Bay Area. They keep taunting me by announcing such, and then something happens and they don’t happen (the last had one opening in Redwood City).

Tommy’s has interesting aspects to it. The classic definition of just when to have a chiliburger at Tommy’s involves it being sometime between 2 and 4 a.m. and just having finished a personally appropriate level of debauchery. However, one must also consider that there are as many fake Tommy’s (Tomy’s, etc.) in LA as there are “Original Ray’s” pizzas in NYC. So you may not have hit a franchise so much as an unauthorized semi-copy.

One of the sites I found had some great information on herbal teas and was really helpful. Being that its so hard to find information I thought this would help
