Viper Comics and Javier Grillo-Marxuach announce the winners of a pretty cool contest for fan artists:
In the late summer of 2006, I got on the phone with Les Mcclaine and pitched him the story that would become “The Middleman: Volume Three.” At the time, I told Les that I had two ideas for endings and wasn’t sure which one would be best…by the time I was done pitching, one of the endings had been deemed “too depressing” a coda for the book. A few months later, with the script finalized and Les ready to go to work on the art, the discussion arose of what special features to include in the Volume Three Trade. We were both interested in a fan art contest…and I had not been able to get the rejected ending out of my mind. That’s when Les came up with the brilliant idea to not only do a fan art contest, but that first prize should be a published assignment as the illustrator of the “alternate ending” to Volume Three.
Check out the rest of the entries here. Chad Thomas, the winner of the contest, has a LiveJournal where you can check out his submission. The artwork above (a runner-up in the contest, but still my personal favorite) is by Uriel Duran.

Cool contest, but the image link for the winner’s illustration doesn’t work. That’s too bad.

I’d love to look at the winners and runners up, but the Viper site is jacked beyond belief. Clicking on some thumbnails does nothing at all, while with others it opens up a tiny little window with no scrollbars that only shows the upper left hand corner of the image and can’t be resized. WTF, guys? Why use a bunch of broken JavaScript to do something that can be done just as easily (and more reliably) with a simple HTML link? Fire your web designer.
