Wait, what…? Rob Liefeld and Robert Kirkman together? (From the page that links to this on Liefeld’s website: “Preview of my new project from Marvel Comics with superstar writer Robert Kirkman, coming in 2008.”) The Bendis Board doesn’t hold back with its opinions:
“So how many shields did Cap have anyway? Iron Man has one… Bucky has one (on an upcoming Cap cover)… Colbert has one… this is just getting dumb. Way to make Cap’s death seem as much like a gratuitous marketing gimmick as possible Marvel.”
“at least liefeld has been consistent in maintaining his horrific attack on comic book art throughout the years. aside from everything else we could point out, why is the shield shown facing directly at the viewer considering the camera angle AND the angle that the arm is turned at?”
“I didnt know writing a couple of Image books, a run on Ultimate X-Men that bleeds readers, and a book titled Ant-Man that is in cancellation danger makes you a super star writer. I really like most of the stuff Kirkman puts out, including Ant-Man, Invincible, Walking Dead and Marvel Zombies….but calling him a super star is a BIG stretch.”
“I feel like I’m missing the inside joke here. I assume that shield is photoshopped in there by someone else and it’s just a gag, right?”
Only if the joke is on all of fandom, my friend…

Kirkman & Liefeld working on a new version of Killraven?

That looks a lot like Killraven to me. It kinda makes sense, since they’re (finally) collecting Alan Davis’s Killraven series this summer, so they’re probably trying to build up some knowledge of the character’s existence.
That said, this will probably be bad. And late, very, very, very late.

Liefeld still isn’t anything I’d want to read, but I have to admit that, based on that picture, he’s gotten substantially better over the years. Look! Feet! And they seem human!

He’ll always be a superstar to me.

If I recall correctly, Killraven got a hold of Cap’s shield at some point and had it in Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers Forever. So if this is indeed Killraven, then at the very least it’s not capitalizing on the death of Cap to give him the shield, it’s just keeping with past stories.

Robert Kirkman, it seems, loves Marvel a bit too much.

Argh, no giving Liefeld Killraven. Bad. Bad. Bad.

It might be worth it if Don MacGregor scripted it.

Rob Liefeld is to American comic books what Lyndon LaRouche is to American politics. Being a fan of either should automatically disqualify you from being allowed to participate in … well, anything. Ever.

The best contribution LaRouche ever made is Ian Boothy using him as a punchline in Simpsons Comics.

Is that the reason behind Kirkman’s defense of Liefeld from a few months ago, comparing him to Kirby, or was that the courtship?
