Many thanks to my pal, the Junior Mad Scientist (check out his fun 24-hour comics), for this Yahoo link to a fascinating story about Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Berkeley Breathed (nee of Bloom County and Opus) helping Fox TV’s long-standing Saturday crime show, America’s Most Wanted, try to solve a nearly 30-year-old murder case in, gulp, Austin.
The case involved the murder of a local musician by a burglar who had ransacked various apartments in the Austin neighborhood where Breathed lived while attending the University of Texas in 1979.
It was named the “Book of Days” murder because because the suspect may be connected to a series of burglaries of apartments of student photographers like Breathed who worked on a desk calendar of the same name. When Austin police announced the “Book of Days” connection, the burglaries stopped.
Breathed has prepared a sketch of the crime scene that will be shown on America’s Most Wanted tomorrow in hopes that someone will step forward, even after all this time…
