Death Note artist takes on video game tie-in

Brian Ashcraft at Kotaku discovered this link highlighting a new manga tie-in for the upcoming Xbox 360 RPG “Blue Dragon” (which has been out in Japan for awhile now). The art work should be instantly familiar to “Death Note” fans as it’s by Takeshi Obata. Ashcraft has more info:

Based off the Xbox 360 video game and written by Tsuneo Takano, Blue Dragon RalΩGrado has been making regular appearances in Weekly Shonen Jump since last December. The shirtless dude with nipple covers is mammary-loving “Ral.” His blue dragon is named “Grado.” The manga is now being published in book form.

The interesting thing about all this (for me anyway) is that the actual Blue Dragon game features the art and character design of Dragon Ball Z creator Akira Toriyama, who’s work is about 180 degrees from Obata’s more realistic art style.

Lots more pictures at either link, including a somewhat NSFW image of Rai feeling up some well-endowed young woman. Kotaku also has a link to the more cartoony-looking anime spin off.

After hearing that Obata would be handling the art for Ral Grado, all I could think was how disappointing it was that he didn’t get to design the Blue Dragon game instead. Toriyama is good, but Obata blows him away.
