Taking a cue from sites like Project Rooftop, Warren Ellis starts a weekly thread over on The Engine asking people to post images of a redesigned character — the first being Witchblade:
I was going to start with Sherlock Holmes, for my own amusement, but the undercurrent of reclaiming and “fixing” female characters badly handled by their owners is unavoidable in the redesign comics jams — there’s kind of a political tone and cultural response to things like reimagining Supergirl or that female Robin replacement.

OMG! Everyone quick, go to MY BLOG and post a pic of your revised edition of Speedball/Captain Carrot/Slapstick/Peter Porker/Hindsight Lad!!!!
Y’all must be bored. Now to wait for that guy who did ComicSpace to create a site where you can all contribute your very own renditions of any character to create galleries that no one else is really going to look at.

Kinda negative, huh, Ugly American? As a kid, it was always fun to reinterpret my favorite characters. This is no different, and it’s fun seeing people get excited about superheroes.

So, if I wanted to post at the Engine, would I have to take a picture of myself smoking a cigarette, or is that optional?

Not that I agree with Ugly American’s negativity, but when Warren Ellis is involved in this sort of thing there’s a sort of, I don’t know, cynicism that comes through. Especially when he says stuff about “reclaiming female characters mishandled by their owners”. It just doesn’t have that rah! rah! Let’s redesign superheroes for fun vibe to it.
Maybe that’s just me.
