Odds & Ends

–In the latest Rolling Stone, cover date April 7 and featuring a Pink Floyd cover, former American Idol contestant Chris Daughtry reveals he had three different career ambitions in high school — singer, a Jean-Claude Van Damme-style actor and comic artist. I guess if the whole rock star thing doesn’t work out, he has something to fall back on.

–My brother sent me this one, and even though I’m not 100 percent sure it’s relevant to a comic blog, I’m posting it anyway. Mexican wrestling star El Hijo del Santo is fighting environmental threats down in Mexico:

Working with the environmental nonprofit group Wildcoast, the masked professional wrestler last week toured the Tijuana slum of Canyon de los Laureles. Garbage and sewage from the slum tumble into the Tijuana river, which separates the border between Mexico and the United States.

“For me, it’s a pleasure to kick off this campaign with Wildcoast and use my persona to spread the message of caring for our seas and environment to the authorities and the people,” he said before heading south to the village of San Ignacio.

The guy puts on a mask and fights bad guys in an attempt to save the world … maybe it is relevant after all.

–Mark Martin explains why people will pay “an outrageous fortune” for a Dali or a Warhol, while an original page of Frank art sells for less:

I can explain that the way I explain so many things in life:

People are stupid. It really is that simple. You can go and read all the analyses and theses and essays and columns by all of the learned scholars, but it really won’t explain anything because there is no logical explanation. MY explanation is that people don’t understand art but they do understand celebrity. I could go on and on and explain that further, but in the end it just does not make sense the way art is praised and rewarded by society. Usually. Some things I agree with. But you would probably disagree. For example, I think it is good that Little Miss Sunshine made it all the way to the Oscars. But most comics fans would probably rather see that horrid “Batman Begins” get more praise and glory.

–Joel Meadows, who has put together a book of comic artists interviews called Studio Space, is looking for a publisher. The book will include interviews with many comic heavyweights, including Jim Lee, Walt Simonson, Joe Kubert, Mike Mignola, Frank Miller and Alex Ross, among others.
