One thing I didn’t do enough with my kids, save the youngest, and only for a short time at that: Sharing my love for comics with my kids by spending quality time reading to them. That’s the admirable and very fun gist of this ongoing set of blog posts by my favorite comics reader blog of the moment, Blake Bell’s Best of/Most of starting here, who’s rereading Jeff Smith’s Bone saga with his two boys.
Blake also started a thread over on the TCJ message board about the Bone reread that’s garnered some interesting posts from fathers attempting to interest their boys and girls. And, evidently, Mr. Smith, in the midst of proudly showing off his first-ever Bone plush toy (below) noticed Blake’s reread too…

My son is 6, and we’ve read the entire Bone saga already, and we pretty much read a comic book per night these days. His favorites: “Teen Titans Go!” and the new “Power Pack” stuff. The only “mainstream” title he likes is “Blue Beetle,” suprisingly–mostly because it’s got aliens in it and a cool costume, but also because it’s not as slowly paced as every other mainstream comic book these days. Try reading an average Marvel comic to a kid. Nothing happens except the kid gets bored.
Oh yeah, he also really liked “Runaways,” which I thought was too mature for him, but he wanted to read it, and I’m not going to restrict his passion for comics!

There’s nothing like reading comics aloud to kids to make you realize just how bad many comics writers really are!
My 6-year old loves Bumperboy (and so do I!), Sonic, A Bit Haywire and Frannie K. Stein. When he’s a little older, I plan to introduce him to my absolute favorite, Amelia Rules!, which is possibly the best all-ages series being published.

Thanks for the link, Wayne.
I ordered the colour edition of the first volume for my son, so we’ll see how he responds to that.
Part 5 of our Bone Re-Read is coming up tomorrow morning!
