Brooklyn’s own Gigantic Graphic Novels is a success story in independent and self-published graphic novels. Founded in 2005 by writer Rick Spears and artist Rob G. after they couldn’t find a mainstream publisher for their series Teenagers From Mars, Gigantic now publishes two or three books a year by comics creators whose work is often too unusual to be published elsewhere, including writer Macon Blair and artist Joe Flood (Hellcity) and James Callahan (Rotting in Dirtville). This evening at McNally Robinson the writers and artist of Gigantic talk about their work as creators and as publishers in the rapidly changing comics industry. Original comic art will be offered for sale along with graphic novels from Gigantic.
Teenagers from Mars should be required reading for all comic fans. In fact, let’s just say that it is, right here, right now. We’ll require proof before we start giving out the secret handshake …
