On his blog, Shazam! screenwriter John August dispels rumors that Jake Gyllenhaal is in talks to play Captain Marvel.
“It’s frustrating how in the digital age, random speculation turns to fact in about .003 seconds,” August writes. “And once it starts, it’s like a tire fire: any attempt to extinguish it merely creates a lot more smoke.”
August, who was announced as the movie’s screenwriter less than two weeks ago, goes on to speculate how the rumor started, connecting Gyllenhaal’s starring role in Zodiac, sister Maggie’s casting in the next Batman movie, the previous rumor that Gyllenhaal could replace Tobey Maguire on the Spider-Man franchise, and a few other things.
“I can pretty much assure you he’s never heard of the project,” August writes. “And we’ve never discussed him. We’ve never seriously discussed anyone. … After several months of meetings, casting has come up exactly zero times. There’s no casting list. If there were a list, Gyllenhaal’s name would probably be on it, but trust me: there is no list. There’s no start date, no release date, no movie whatsoever. There’s just a script to be written. Which I should probably get back to.”
Feh. Who needs Jake Gyllenhaal as Captain Marvel when you could have John Davey?

The more I think about it, the more I think that Jerry O’Connell (the chubby kid from Stand by Me) would be pretty good as Capt. Marvel. He voiced him in Justice League Unlimited and he actually has that wide eyed positive outlook that the Captain has. He’s also had some superheroing experience – he was the star of the Canadian TV show My Secret Identity in the the 80′s.
