If Woodring can’t make a go of it, what hope is there for any of us?

The Daily Cross Hatch has part one of a two part interview with Jim Woodring up:

Well, when I was doing comics, it was the way I made my living and supported my family, so, yeah, I did work at it like a 9-5 job. I guess talking about the work that went into it, my feelings would fall into two categories. One, it seems to me that a lot of people find it easier to draw comics than I do, I guess because I’m not a natural draughtsman. I have to plan everything out very carefully. I go through a number of drafts, and frequently throw pencil pages away and redo them. And the other is that the money that I got for doing them was barely enough to live on. I was in a state of continual financial turmoil when I was making my living doing comics. So I guess that if the money had been better, I wouldn’t have complained about the hard work.

Notice the past tense in that statement. Apart from a possible Ignatz series, it doesn’t sound like he’s going to be doing any more comics any time soon.

  1. Mike Says:

I hope Jim comes back to comics very soon.

  2. Mike Oxbig Says:

That’s a shame. Jim was a one of a kind comic.

  3. Dick Hyacinth Says:

This is certainly a much more tragic turn of events than anything done by Marvel or DC lately. I think most Woodring fans were expecting it, though, even if only on a subconscious level.
