Billy DeBeck’s sketchbook

March 16th, 2007
Author Chris Mautner

Unless you own a copy of “The Smithsonian Book of Comic Strips,” Billy DeBeck is probably not a name that rings any bells, at least not right away. But in his hey day, from about 1920 to 1940, his strip, Barney Google, was one of the best known in the country. (It later became Snuffy Smith, which still continues to this day — and the less said about that the better.)

Anyway, I mention all this not to bore you with a history lesson, but as a preface to pointing you towards this lovely collection of sketches DeBeck did back presumably around the 1930s. There’s little information about when and where these drawings were done, but man if that ain’t some great cartoonin’ goin’ on there.
