Legendary comic-book writer Arnold Drake, co-creator of Deadman and the Doom Patrol, passed away today after a brief illness. He was 83.
Mark Evanier has a nice write-up on Drake, whose career included stints on titles as varied as DC Comics’ Batman and House of Mystery, Marvel’s X-Men and Gold Key’s Star Trek and Little Lulu.
Drake helped to establish the Bill Finger Award and, in 2005, was its first recipient.

I love Deadman, and I’ve been reading the Gold Key trek collections. Damn * 2

A truly brilliant, dark, playful, weird genius. Comics could use more like him. Break out your Doom Patrol archives, and if you have none, get some.

At the Eisner Awards in 2005 he did a great little song about San Diego. It was the only part of the very long awards show that stuck in my mind. I may have a link somewhere.

Damn.
Someone start using Midway City regularly again, please…and name a street or a neighbourhood for the man.
Requiescat in pacem, Mr. Drake. Sorry we never got to meet…
