EximiusVir at the Bendis Board is looking on the bright side:
“Thank you Marvel for messing a character up so much, that I go read other things, and love them more. of course i’m talking about 616 spidey. And I used to pull Amazing, MK/Sensational, Friendly Neighborhood, and Ultimate Spider-man. now all that has changed, and the only one that I still pull is Ultimate. Thanks Marvel, for switching things up for me”
Of course, not everyone shares his feelings:
“They haven’t touched that stuff about the [revised, Spider-God totem] origin or The Other with a ten foot pole (at least in Amazing Spider-Man). As always, he was the deepest, most realistic character of the story, as he represented the ‘everyman’ within the Civil War conflict, torn between loyalties and responsibilities to those he cares about and feels indebted to. He had an amazing moment wherein he basically told Iron Man to go fuck himself in front of the entire country, AND he’s wearing the black costume, which is one of the most badass costumes ever. So yeah, I’d say he was pretty good.”
When the defense ends up as “Yeah, their stories are crappy but they’re ignoring them, so it’s all a-okay!” then you know that something’s gone wrong.

Fair point, mind you. With the benefit of hindsight, and bearing in mind that Straczynski’s run is nearly over, what WAS the point of “The Other”? What consequences did the story have? I can’t think of any.

Other than sales what is the point of any big event story!
What was the point of CW, any of the DC Crisis comics or even 52.

Spidey now has wikid-kuhl SPIDER-STINGS, yo!
STINGS! Just like a REAL SPIDER! WHOOOO!
Other than that, and the fact that it was a successful attempt to string the whole line together into one solid superstory…all questions of quality, intent and artistic value aside…

He used to read Friendly Neighborhood Spidey…
Well then, The Other isn’t what’s turned him off of Spidey. F’n Spidey *began* with The Other.
