WonderCon, Day 2: Here come the people …

March 4th, 2007
Author JK Parkin

The difference between day 1 and day 2 of WonderCon? More people. Lots and lots and LOTS more people came out for the second day, a Saturday, natch, filling the halls of the Moscone Center.

For grins, here’s a view “from the rafters” on Friday afternoon:

And here’s a picture of roughly the same spot on Saturday afternoon:

Witness Saturday’s line to get in, which wasn’t nearly as long on Friday:

The line

My wife came with me on Saturday and wasn’t pre-registered, so we had to wait in line. (I promised her we’d go to the Chinese New Year parade that evening if she came to the con with me). Which wasn’t bad, because Saturday was also masquerade day, which meant we saw a lot of people walking around in costume, like this guy in an Alien costume:

who was getting his picture made all day with happy little kids. And other people in costumes:

The 501st Legion was on hand … there’s nothing like Stormtroopers to provide a little extra security:

And a couple more booth shots, for Strangers in Paradise and Oni Press:

There was more than one person working the Oni booth; everyone else scattered when I pulled out my camera.

People

Linda Medley and friends

This one was actually from Friday, after Linda Medley’s spotlight panel, as she stops to sign books for folks outside the room.

Art Clokey

Wildcard Ink, who publish the Gumby comic, hosted Gumby creator Art Clokey at their booth on Saturday.

Art Adams
Ernie Chan
Josh Middleton

Artist Alley was pretty crowded on Saturday, particularly Josh Middleton’s table.

Christopher Moore

Author Christopher Moore had a long line at the HarperCollins booth as he signed his latest book, You Suck: A Love Story.

Annalee Newitz

Annalee Newitz, who blogs for Wired.com’s Table of Malcontents, has a couple of posts up about the con and her crush on Ian Brill.

Parade

So after the con my wife and I headed down the street to get ready for the Chinese New Year parade. Vendors with rolling carts came by selling cotton candy, Snap Pops (which we bought for a buck) and blow-ups of your favorite web-slinging super hero:

The parade was a little long — I’ve seen enough kids in pig costumes to last me a lifetime — but fun, and the dragons were really cool:

It could have used more stormtroopers, however.
