Millar: Dance for me, my little puppets.

Yeah, who didn’t see this coming? Mark Millar Faux Controversy Machine! Go!:

Like all my pals, the TV and movie people have come calling and even the computer game people (which is weird because games are for pedos and I have no interest).

Now, lets look at how computer game people are reacting:

Wait, a guy who writes comic books for a living is saying that games are for pedophiles? I think tipster Neal put it best: What a jackass, especially coming from someone who works in an industry that is often geared toward a young market. What is this, Comic Industry Stupidity Day?

Or:

I’ve always harbored a mild disgust for Mark Millar, because the guy always comes off as a very shameless self-promoting “rock star” writer who doesn’t think before he talks. But hey, now he’s saying we’e all pedophiles. Yeah, it’s probably just one of his wacky jokes (which always tend to come off more as smarmy, condescending “I’m better than you” remarks), but it sure is insulting to a very large audience (way larger than his little comics industry, to boot). Get over yourself, Mark Millar–you’re just a freaking comic book writer.

Or even:

I’d thought that Marvel writer Mark Millar couldn’t descend further into self-parody… Y’know what? I’m calling this one on Bad Waiter Syndrome. I got nothing.

Luckily, Mark’s feeling penitant:

That’s hilarious. A clear indication that gamers are twitchy and guilty if they can’t take a joke. I love it. These guys should spend less time whacking off to Miss Lara Croft and more time reading Spider-Man smile.gif

Remember, kids – He only does it to see how you’ll loudly you’ll scream.

so basically, he acts like a typical troll on a message board that gets off on insulting people. a douchebag is a douchebag and millar one big giant douche.

  2. Carroll Says:

Jeez, I’m pretty sure the man was joking, not trolling (there is a difference). I saw this on Kotaku.com before I saw it here and just laughed because people obviously can’t see the humor in it. Of course, without knowing that Millar often says things like that in interviews and on his forum you may not realize he’s quite the kidder. But still, people are way too up in arms about the whole thing.

  3. Thomas Gerhardt Says:

I have concluded not to read comic books by Millar anymore, for the simple fact that he is nothing more than a serial rapist.

    What’s the matter, Mark?

    Can’t take a joke?

  4. Jason Rodriguez Says:

A couple of weeks ago CBR did a Mark Millar Studio Tour. I read it and realized that Mark Millar is just a giant nerd. With that in mind, you can go over all of his idiotic posts over the years (and most of his comics, as well) and understand that he’s not, in fact, a troll. He’s just a ridiculously big nerd. Tremendous nerd.

Like Ben Stiller when he was on Extras. That kind of nerd.

  5. Thomas Gerhardt Says:

Calling people pedophiles is NOT a joke!

  6. tralfaz Says:

sorry, dont buy it. Instead of apologizing and saying he was joking, he went further with his insults by saying that are twitchy and guilty and spend less time jacking off to computer characters. Most people that realize they’ve said something wrong usually say sorry, he pretty much added more saliva to his spit.

  7. Live Free or Dan Coyle Says:

Well, most nerds these days spend an inordinate amount of time attacking other nerds, so…

  8. The Ugly American Says:

There’s always the “Marvel Comic’s Mark Millar calls *all* gamers pedophiles!” thread over at Penny Arcade:

  9. SD Superhero Says:

It sounds like Millar is (very poorly) trying to do an impression of Sarah Silverman.

  10. Laughinateveryone Says:

So Mark Millar makes a joke (or deliberately insults people), people actually take offense, and then he mocks them for taking offense. Looks like everyone involved takes themselves too seriously.

Maybe if Millar’s opinion counted for anything in this world, I’d have been concerned.

  11. Hokeyboy Says:

I can see the humor of it, no question. Still, it’s his real cunty attitude about it that proves once and for all that Crohn’s Disease really does make you retarded.

  12. Ian Says:

“I have concluded not to read comic books by Millar anymore, for the simple fact that he is nothing more than a serial rapist.

    What’s the matter, Mark?

    Can’t take a joke? ”

That isn’t really the same thing at all. Your phrase mentions someone by name and could even be considered slander. As a stray comment in a longer piece, that could easily (and reasonably would) be construed as a joke is a different thing.

  13. BriRi Says:

I’m pretty sure this was a joke directed, in large part, towards his friends in the comic book industry that are avid gamers, especially Bendis.

But I guess people just have a hard time passing up a chance to bitch about Mark Millar…especially not here.

  14. Joe Lawler Says:

How about Scots are serial rapists? Uh, except Graeme

  15. Jim Says:

That comment would have a very, very hard time being slander.

It would have a difficult, but significantly less impossible, time being considered libel.

However, calling him a jackass? Probably not so much – because the truth is a great defense.

  16. Dick Hyacinth Says:

I can’t believe you people are taking this seriously. You’re making comics fans look worse than video game fans. And people who play video games are fat, hygiene-deficient, emotionally-stunted virgins.

  17. Dave Says:

Yes because we all know that comics gets the punani.

  18. Rich Says:

I’m sure I’ll just get called a Millar apologist or something else by the always hyper-reactive newsarama posters –

    - but anybody who spends more than 5 minutes on Millarworld and reads any handful of posts he has made, would realize that he was joking. He makes fun of Bendis, he makes fun of Vaughan. They laugh, they fight back. Like someone else said, he was probably just making fun of Bendis, who is an avid gamer, and now the writer of the Halo series (and writer of the USM video game).

Apologizing would just cater to those who can’t take a joke. So call him a serial rapist or a douche or a jackass, all you want, I don’t think he cares – and unless your goal is “lower yourself to his level” you are not putting him in his place.

I would say that is a much more ridiculous example of a real argument, and people coming off bad.

  19. Dick Hyacinth Says:

“Punani”? Is that irony? I’m a little worried that your irony isn’t getting along with my irony, which might create an irony vortex, which could only be plugged by fat, acne-ridden, virginal video game fans.

  20. Jim Says:

Wait, when did this turn into a virgin debate?

This is about whether video games fans are pedophiles or not.

    Everybody knows that they’re virgins.

  21. Terram Says:

“so basically, he acts like a typical troll on a message board that gets off on insulting people.” In short, he acts like a Tralfaz.

  22. Patrick Says:

“less time whacking off to Miss Lara Croft”

    That’s funny

  23. tralfaz Says:

ha ha terram, looks like im not the only one

  24. Dr.Finger Says:

I know he’s joking but look at it this way. If David Jaffe (producer of God of War) told Gamespot that comics are for pedophiles, what would Mark Millar’s reaction be?

He’d call Jaffe a bigoted ass that doesn’t know the first thing about comics (except he’d probably say it in British), regardless of whether Jaffe meant it as a joke or not.

  25. Rich Says:

Has ther even been a response from any professionals in the (much larger, much much more successful) gaming industry?

    Do they even care?
