I hope everyone that went out to the New York Comic Con had a lot of fun and got a lot of loot. I spent my weekend working overtime *mumble grumble*. At least it’s new comic day, so it’s time to sit back, relax, and enjoy our month’s end offerings!
Tom Bondurant’s Pick of the Week
Good to see new issues of Hero Squared, Green Lantern, and Action Comics, but my pick this week is Firestorm #33, the apparent beginning of the end of the cancelled series, barring a Manhunter-like reprieve. It gets what looks like a decent sendoff from writer Dwayne McDuffie, layout artist Dan Jurgens, penciller Ken Lashley, and inker Rob Stull, as Stormy meets Seven Soldiers’ Mister Miracle and the rest of the New Gods. Previous writers Dan Jolley and Stuart Moore (with artists Chriscross and Jamal Igle) made this version of Firestorm a fairly straightforward, enjoyable exercise in superheroics, so I wouldn’t expect anything less from McDuffie. DC has a preview here, and if you like what you read also offers a paperback reprinting the One Year Later issues (#s 23-27)
Wayne Wonderful Books of the Week
Anytime I can get my hands on a new issue of Tom Beland’s auto-bio romance True Story, Swear to God (#4), it’s a super week… And the arrival of Action Philosophers #8 will make it an even sweeter trip to my local comics shop.
Carla Hewitt’s Pick of the Week
Worried about heroes under the New World Order in the Marvel Universe! Do what the Uncanny X-Men did and head into space! Annihilation: Heralds of Galactus has wonderfully crafted character developing stories for Stardust and Terrax the Tamer and for someone who… really had no idea who these guys were at the start? I thought it was an excellent book.
Lisa Fortuner’s Pick of the Week
This is a great week for me. I’ve been itching to read more of Daredevil, Blue Beetle, and Devi, but my pick for the week is the second Showcase collection for Green Lantern. I’m so predictable.
JK Parkin’s Pick of the Week
Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona’s run on The Runaways ends this week, and it’s definitely my pick of the week. Joss Whedon and Michael Ryan have some pretty big shoes to fill.
Stephanie Chan’s Pick of the Week
Wow, that Runaways #24 cover is delicious! Oh, Jo Chen, how I love thee. If they ever make a poster of that image, I’m totally buying it! It was almost my pick of the week, but in the end, my mood is leaning towards some good ol’ fashion mind control and genetic engineering, so my pick is ES vol. 4 from Del Rey.
Chris Mautner’s Pick of the Week
I don’t see it on Diamond’s list, but I belive the D&Q graphic Novel Aya, by Marguerite Abouet and Clément Oubrerie. I got a preview copy of it the other week and it’s a lovely work and my main pick for the week.
I also believe Cold Heat #3 from PictureBox is out this week and if I can find it at my local shop I’ll purchase it. I’ve been enjoying that quirky series quite a bit.
I’ll also likely get the last issue of The Eternals, just to see how the blamed thing ends. Oh, and it looks like I was wrong and th eighth issue of Action Philosophers comes out this week and not last as I originally thought. I picked a copy up at NYCC this past weekend, but I’d encourage everyone else to check the new issue out as well.
So what did you get this week? Consult the Diamond shipping list and post your picks! Heck, post your NYCC loot, too!

Hey, why don’t we post this up before Wednesday. It’s so much more timely that way and might actually garner some comments. Or just change the name to “I certainly can wait until Wednesday”.
For anyone who still cares, my picks are JLA Classified #35 and Daredevil #94. JLA Classified continues the Slott & Jurgens Fourth Parallel story. This has been a solid traditional JLA story much in the vein of the classic 70’s JLA stories. Daredevil is worth it for the John Romita cover alone plus Brubaker usually delivers the goods.
