The Santa Cruz (Calif.) Sentinel promotes this week’s presentation on the Stagger Lee graphic novel by Derek McCulloch and Shepherd Hendrix at the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco with a feature story on the book:
McCulloch and Hendrix have been friends for 20 years, and though they had tried to work together before, “Stagger Lee” marks the first time they’ve collaborated on a project together.
Hendrix, who did all of the artwork, points to the rich musical tradition behind the story for the legend’s longevity.
“I think one of the reasons it has survived is because of music. So many different artists have taken that story to heart through the music that they’ve heard, and chose to keep it alive,” says Hendrix. “One song begets another — it’s going to inspire someone else to do their own rendition, and so forth.”
The presentation begins at 7 p.m. tomorrow at the Cartoon Art Museum, 655 Mission St., San Francisco.
