The first Ghost Rider reviews are in…

February 15th, 2007

I was checking about the Internets for any early reviews about the Flaming Skull Guy movie, and couldn’t find a listing yet from Rotten Tomatoes as of Thursday afternoon. BTW, they’ve been reporting U.S. press screenings are scheduled for tonight, meaning they’ll likely be too for filing in the Friday morning newspapers…

Uh oh…

The only reviews I’ve found so far on the Net (please send me links when you see ‘em):

Superhero Hype! likes Ghost Rider, but doesn’t elaborate why beyond saying the SFX are well worth the delay from last summer’s original release date. A pretty nebulous recommendation, if you ask me.

Jim Schembri of The Age (one of the top newspapers down under) liked the film for its “proficiency” as a “fast-paced, funny, visually dazzling piece of disposable opening-weekend movie mulch that energetically builds to the now-standard blockbuster movie ending that urgently points to the need for an equally lavish and exciting sequel.”

One more thing: Flaming Skull Head’s alter-ego Johnny Blaze, as played by Nicolas Cage, “is a cheerily eccentric daredevil motorcycle performer. He drinks coffee straight from the pot, gulps jelly beans from cocktail glasses, adores the music of The Carpenters and loves pay-TV documentaries about monkeys.”

The Carpenters?????

Uh oh….

  1. Spencer Carnage Says:

I think Cage is going to make this movie bearable in the same way that the guy who played the human torch did. Not so much in the humorous way as the Human Torch was(although I anticipate some humor), but by making the movie interesting by having a protagonist that’s entertaining in a movie that isn’t. His Johnny Blaze will be a departure from what we all know of the original Johnny Blaze in comics, however the original Johnny Blaze is not all much to write home about.

  2. Ron Says:

As far as the Carpenters thing goes, I think there was some story a few months back about how Cage really, really wanted to get the rights to “Superstar” so he could put it in the movie. And, honestly? “Superstar” makes any movie just a little bit better with its inclusion.

    Hmmmm… I can’t wait to see for myself. :p

  4. Tim O'Neil Says:

I think that’s cool. How obvious would it have been to get Motorhead or Judas Priest or >shudder

  5. Jesse Says:

Whenever there aren’t early review for a movie I get worried. No early reviews is like getting an Alan Smithee director’s credit. Not a very good sign at all.

That said I will still probably go see it. If not this weekend then the next.

Here is a link to a review that appears in the TORONTO STAR.

Actually makes me feel a little more confident about the quality of the movie.

  7. SD Superhero Says:

Either way, I’ll be going into a “GR” screening this weekend with no real expectations.

I figure that’s the safest way to approach the film, as I’m just looking for visual candy more than anything resembling great art.

And if the movie rots, then, well, I’ll just move on with my life.
