A Blog@ Valentine’s Day: Our favorite comic couples

February 14th, 2007
Author JK Parkin

In honor of Valentine’s Day, your Blog@ cupids offer you a sticky-sweet candy heart of our own … our favorite comic book couples. While it would have been easy to offer up a list as predictable as a Hallmark card, we opted to skip some of the more obvious couples, like Reed & Sue, Lois & Clark, and Peter and MJ, and instead went for some that were off the beaten path:

Medusa and Black Bolt (Carla Hewitt)

If love is faith and faith is trust, then Marvel’s Inhuman monarchs know a little about everything. Black Bolt, cursed with incredible destructive power from a single syllable, and his lady love Medusa haven’t always been together, but their devotion to one another is nigh-unshakable. Medusa reached out to him as a kid when he was locked away from Atillan because of his birthright and they developed a secret sign language that helped him communicate. When she went missing and amnesiatically joined the Frightful Four, Black Bolt moved heaven and earth to find her and bring her back to his side as his Queen. When the Ruling Council denied them a child, something the two of them had a pretty big fight over, in the end they came back together to mourn their mutual loss. And when Black Bolt’s intricate plan to protect his people and foil his lunatic brother required his wife to sacrifice her own powers, she bravely her king’s lead.

Both of them are rather fantastic people: Black Bolt’s come into a recent bit of popularity since he’s been added into the Illuminati and was one of the rather awesome moments in Black Panther’s House of M tale, and Medusa has stood in for Susan Richards on the Fantastic Four, her hair alone an artist’s dream to get to sketch out. Both of them can hold their own in the face of danger but when the sum of their parts creates this bigger whole, two people devoted to their people and each other, you get a powerhouse.

It takes a lot to rule a country and when two people come together for a greater whole, you can build a foundation on which whole sci-fi cities are made. When people put their lives in your hands, there’s a level of trust there that when respected can only strengthen the whole. And just because he doesnt say ‘I love you’ doesn’t mean he won’t show you in other ways.

Fone Bone and Thorn Harvestar (JK Parkin)

He was a short, lovable foreigner who wandered into her valley and fell into a hero’s quest; she was his farm girl crush and, unknowingly, heir to the throne. They were from different worlds – and different species – so it was probably ill-fated from the beginning.

It wasn’t the typical match you’d expect in a fantasy comic, but Fone’s love for Thorn was so pure and sweet that you couldn’t help but cheer for the little guy to get the girl. He was quite the opposite of Prince Charming, but when push came to shove, he was there for Thorn when she needed him, and vice versa.

Batman and Silver St. Cloud (Tom Bondurant)

You’re going to throw things, because this is the couple I always select, but I still have to pick Bruce Wayne and Silver St. Cloud. I like that she’s perceptive enough to see, and fall in love with the real Bruce Wayne — not the fop, not Batman, but the guy behind both. Regardless, when she ultimately realizes Bruce is Batman, with all that entails, she breaks up with him knowing that Batman will always be in the way. (I’m pretty sure Silver was unique among Bat-girlfriends in this respect, until Matt Wagner’s recent take on Julie Madison.) Silver is smart and independent, not needing the company of a Bruce Wayne to complete her life, so the real issue thus becomes how much Bruce needs her. We don’t quite get an answer, although the argument could be made that the breakup helped Batman slide more into grim lonerhood.

The original Detective Comics arc (in issues 469-76) has clearly withstood the test of time, and her return in 2005′s Batman: Dark Detective thankfully didn’t diminish those ’70s stories. I think another installment is in the works, which would be appropriate given DD’s rather abrupt ending. However, if there’s no Dark Detective 2, at least Batman now has “hand….”

Krazy Kat and Ignatz Mouse (Chris Mautner)

Whilst we spend this Valentine’s Day gazing into our loved ones adoring eyes, let us not forget those of use who suffer the burden of unrequited love. And is there any love more unrequited than that of Krazy Kat for his “lil angil” Ignatz Mouse? I think not. May we all be as blissfully unaware of our beloved’s true feelings, and as steadfastedly resolute in our devotion towards them.

Sasquatch and Aurora (Michael May)

Everyone loves a pair of star-crossed lovers and they don’t get much more star-crossed than Walter “Sasquatch” Langkowski and Jeanne-Marie “Aurora” Beaubier. He’s a former pro-football player who’s managed to hang on to his science-nerd cred; she’s a French Canadian beauty who suffers from multiple personality disorder and is just as liable to slap you in the face as she is to tear your clothes off and go to town.

Unfortunately for Sasquatch, Aurora’s vixen personality was dominant when he fell for her in a classic Beauty and the Geek scenario. It wasn’t until he was well-invested in their relationship that he even realized she had a second personality. And that it wasn’t quite as interested in his advances as the first one.

And things weren’t so easy for Aurora either. Struggling with dual personalities is difficult enough without trying to fit a relationship into the situation. And Sasquatch could be a little whiny.

As hard as it was though, it was heart-warming to see that Sasquatch truly cared about Aurora and didn’t just drop her once he learned about her disorder. And it was even more heart-warming to see her respond to his love. Eventually, Sasquatch — never one to leave alone Things That Man Is Not Meant to Know — even figured out a way to merge Aurora’s personalities and “heal” her. For a moment, it looked like happiness might actually be possible.

But then Sasquatch goes and gets killed and his disembodied soul gets stuck in a robot and Aurora has Needs that a robot can’t fulfill (not without special attachments, anyway) and there you go. They’re done. Sasquatch has remained a more or less asexual bachelor ever since while Aurora has spiraled psychologically into a never-ending cycle of relapse, cure, and relapse again. But what did you expect from star-crossed lovers? A happy ending?

For a while though, there was potential. And for a while, they were happy. And it’s the memories of those times that make Sasquatch and Aurora a Great Comics Couple.

  1. Michael May Says:

Is that Batman/Silver arc collected anywhere? I’ve been wanting to read that for a while.

  2. JK Parkin Says:

Yeah, I saw many mentions of it when I was looking for images last night:

    http://www.amazon.com/Batman-Strange-Apparitions-Steve-Englehart/dp/1563895005/ref=pd_sim_b_4/105-5666584-2822839

  3. Jeff McClelland Says:

No Ben Grimm and Alicia Masters? For shame.

  4. BatFan Says:

Nope, that image is from “Strange Apparitions”. Dark Detective is a new mini-series, last year I think.

  5. AuH20 Says:

Michael, the first run of Marshall Rodgers’ work with Batman and Silver St. Cloud is collected in “Batman: Strange Apparitions,” the modern sequel in “Batman: Dark Detective.”

I’m not a huge fan of either collection, to be honest, but they have been collected for our enjoyment.

  6. dr.5trange Says:

    or spiderman and maryjane………

  7. JK Parkin Says:

Spider-Man and Mary Jane — too obvious. If we went with them, we’d have to throw in Lois and Clark, Reed and Sue … then it’s more of a best of list, and not our personal favorites. I covered this in the intro, didn’t I?

Ben and Alicia … they were on my shortlist, along with Nightcrawler and Amanda.

  8. sideshow bob Says:

Batman and Silver St. Cloud storyline was good in that it was also where the Joker first created his Laughing Fish (and the whole copyright idea). The story was modified to be made into one of the Batman the animated series episodes – no mention of Silver :(

  9. Brett Says:

You forgot the best part of the Aurora/Sasquatch pairing: when he became a woman.

  10. Sean Says:

I’d nominate Bigby Wolf and Snow White from Fables. They’re polar opposites and for a lot of the book they had a great love/hate thing going on a la “Cheers” but they finally made it.

  11. Mark D. White Says:

What about Roy Harper and ? ;)

  12. Joe Says:

    Aquaman & Mera?

  13. Ryan McLelland Says:

My favorite comic couple? Marc Hempel’s Gregory and Herman the Rat. Those two were just the bestest couple ever to hit stands and who can beat an insane kid locked in a straitjacket playing with poo while his rat friend watches?

It’s a classic comic brought to you by our friends at DC Comics…

  14. Ye Olde Iowa Says:

I second Sean is saying Bigby and Snow should be mentioned. Their romance played out incredibly well and the little details of their relationship are really what made it.

In the superhero romance category though, my favorite will always be Gambit and Rogue. Her reluctance to give in and his persistence made for a great dynamic. I always thought they played well off one-another (especially during Jim Lee’s run). They may not have stayed together, but their romance was memorable.

  15. Joe Jusko Says:

I’m still a Peter and Gwen guy. Biggest mistake Marvel ever made!

  16. Tyler Says:

    How about/food for thought…
    Nova and Namorita?
    Spider-Man and Black Cat?
Future Franklin Richards and Phoenix (Rachel Summers)
Scott and Jean Grey? Logan and Jean?
    Batman and Cat Woman?
    Wonder Woman and Trevor?
All time romance though…What about THANOS and DEATH???????

  17. Tom Hunter Says:

Rooting for a new coupling of Roy Harper/Speedy/Arsenal/Red Arrow and Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl myself.

Agree with the Bruce Wayne & Silver St. Cloud coupling as well.

One of my all time favorites that will probably never play again just because of the way the characters have changed over the years would be Matt Murdock/ Daredevil & Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow.

  18. JK Parkin Says:

    Arsenal + Hawkgirl = brilliant

  19. Robert Blythe Says:

I think the best couple that no one mentioned here has to be Katchoo and Francine in STRANGERS IN PARADISE, which is my favorite comic of all time and is about to come to an end after 114 issues in May,

  20. Nug Says:

No Dan and Marla from Blue Devil?!?! Or Red Tornado and Kathy? She loves a robot for jebus’ sake!

  21. Liz Says:

I would’ve nominated Ralph and Sue Dibny.

  22. c. towns Says:

batman and silver st. could were made for each other.

  23. jake saint Says:

    Dr. Doom.

  24. Tyler Says:

    Scarlet Witch and Vision!!!!!

  25. Wonder Boy Says:

What about Big Barda and Mr. Miracle?!

  26. Tyler Says:

The Wasp and Hank Pym? This is a couple who have had their ups and downs to say the least…

  27. wax atom Says:

    green arrow & black cannary,
    wolverine & jean grey…they never were a couple but…the love was there…
    ohhh superboy & wondergirl
    wondergirl & robin…they could be on springer…

  28. Cal Says:

I like the wrongness behing Roy Harper and Cheshire.

but very interested to see Roy and Kendra.

    others- Ollie/Dinah
    Batman/Catwoman
    Dick Grayson/Barbara Gordon

  29. Rob Barrett Says:

Wesley Dodds and Dian Belmont. Sandman Mystery Theatre was a romance comic–one of the best–disguised as a pulp action book.

  30. chdb Says:

Any list that leaves off Brainiac Five and Supergirl is NOT A LIST!

  31. victor creed Says:

    dude…GAMBIT AND ROGUE

Gambit could get any girl he wants but he stays with the one whose mutant power is have AIDS. That’s love man.

  32. Cray_ws Says:

How about Apollo and Midnighter, thats definitely not popular as Parker & MJ.

  33. Slickpuppy Says:

Hands down, the most devoted and romantic couple I ever saw in comics: Cutter and Leetah of ELFQUEST.

  34. rod Says:

    Showing my age, but:

    Barry & Iris
    Thom & Nura
    Wally & Raven
    Dick & Kory
    Hank & Jan
    Hal & Carol

  35. JTolliver Says:

Wow!, I was expecting way more BRUCE/SElINA/BATMAN/CATWOMAN, their thing has always been way more fun than Silver St.Cloud

  36. Brainlock Says:

    Vance & Angelica?
    Rich & Nita?
    Dick & Barb?
    Dick & Kory?
Dick & Donna? – I was rooting for these two right up to Donna’s wedding in NTT #50, when I realized it was a different kind of love, BUT they still love each other.

Buddy & Ellen? she ‘knew’ the moment he “died” from LIGHT YEARS AWAY.

Beast & Trish Tilby – he ended it over ‘race relations’ live on national TV by saying “I’m gay.” (meaning it was better for them both to stick to their own kind)

Logan & Storm – you know Ororo would rather have Logan than T’Challa, but neither will ever admit it.

Wally & Linda – their love connection brought him back several times.

Simon & Wanda – she fell for Vision’s mind…which was based on SIMON’S brain patterns. every time they almost get together, something happens to tear them apart, plus she brought him back to life last time

Chuck Taine and Triad (Luornu?) – hey, any fat guy who can handle TRIPLETS is ok in my book! LOL!

  37. Dave Hackett Says:

Swamp Thing and Abigail Cable. C’mon, the guy went to Hell, leveled Gotham City and traveled through both space and time for her. I’d say they rate. ;)

  38. Michael May Says:

“You forgot the best part of the Aurora/Sasquatch pairing: when he became a woman.”

Ha! My memory’s rusty, but hadn’t she already moved on to Roger Bochs by then? That was a great time in Sasquatch history though.

To the folks who mentioned Snow and Bigby: great call. I’m ashamed I didn’t think of them right away.

I did think of Rogue and Gambit, but would’ve had to have written them up as my least-favorite couple. I liked Gambit’s unrelenting flirtation as long as Rogue knew that’s all it was and was on to him. I’ve never bought them as a serious couple though.

Oh, and thanks JK for the link. That’s exactly what I was looking for.

  39. RMC Says:

Yeah, Silver St. Cloud! Steve Engelhart worked magic at Detective Comics. Remember Rupert Thorne vs. the ghost of Hugo Strange? I want to see Cameron Diaz playing Silver in Dark Knight! Nay, I demand it!

  40. Toileteer Says:

    Crystal and that insurance salesman.

    The Purple Man and Jewel.

Dr. Fate, when it was that vaguely incestuous mother-and-son pair.

Mandrill and all of the Marvel superheroines.

Swift, and that guy who made her kneel and either take his meat or cigar butt, I forget which version got censored.

For that matter the Engineer had underaged sex, and then necrophiliac sex (as a corpse).

Wasp and Hank Pym, Paladin, Iron Man, Hawkeye, and Ultimate Captain America.

Dr. Doom and his mother. (Mama Doom?)

Jarvis and what’s-her-name. (Alfred, in the Ultimate universe!)

And what do you think Madrox does when alone in a room together?

  41. wojr Says:

I’m suprised no one mentioned Nightwing & Starfire – Always thought Starfire was a better pairing for Dick than Oracle.

My favorite though is Green Lantern and Hawkgirl from the Justice League cartoon – I know it’s technically not a comic, but I’m still putting it out there.

  42. roberto guedes Says:

Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy. ‘Nuff Said!

  43. Gérson Fasano Says:

Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy rules !!!!
