Can’t Wait for Wednesday

February 13th, 2007

Nothing screams “Valentine’s Day” like a romatic trip with your loved ones to the comic store, then buying them that special something. Can you imagine it?

“Oh honey! This is the greatest Valentines Day ever! I never want flowers or chocolates ever again! No, don’t bother taking me to that fancy romantic French restaurant. Let’s just stay here at the comic shop. Yes, I know we have a room booked in that five-star hotel. We can
just bring our comics there and read them, right? But not in the jacuzzi! The steam might make the pages wrinkle. I love you!”

I tell no lie. This is what will happen. Here is what everyone at Blog@Newsarama is planning this Wednesday…

Graeme McMillan’s Pick of the Week

Only fitting that this week, when comics ship on Valentine’s Day, that I find myself choosing something that I already know that I love: Matt Fraction and Gabriel Ba’s Casanova #7 ships this week, ending the first run of the book on a high note – For those of you who’ve not been picking this up so far, the trade’s out in a couple of months and is highly, highly recommended.

Meanwhile, DC provides an unusual valentine to my lovely wife Kate who, ever since his appearance on Smallville last year, has been madly in love with Aquaman. Showcase Presents Aquaman Volume 1 may not be everyone’s cupidgift, but on this side of San Francisco, it’ll do the job.

Chris Mautner’s Pick of the Week

Wow, that’s a really light week. It’s probably for the best, since I’ve been spending way too much lately and NYCC is coming up, etc. The only thing that snagged my radar was Casanova #7 and the final issue of NextWave, #12. If my wife read comics I’d buy one for her, but she doesn’t. So she’s getting a puzzle book instead. Go romance.

Lisa Fortuner’s Pick of the Week

It comes down to Manhunter and Justice Society for me, but last week’s Starman plot puts Justice Society at the top of this week’s list.

Tom Bondurant’s Pick of the Week

I can’t say no to Batman #663, featuring both the return of Grant Morrison and a Joker story. As for my wife, like Chris’s spouse she’s not much of a comics reader. She does like Foster’s Home For Imaginary Friends, but that DVD doesn’t come out for another month. D’oh!

JK Parkin’s Pick of the Week

My pick of the week is Nextwave, the same comic I’d buy for my wife. It’s the only series since Bone and Starman I’ve been able to get her interested in … so of course it’s ending.

I should probably make her read Jeff Smith’s Shazam! as well.

Shane Bailey’s Pick of the Week

Nextwave for me too. I’m hoping for more Modok Elvi.

Stephanie Chan’s Pick of the Week

We will laugh. We will cry. I think my Valentine’s Day will be a bit bittersweet as my beau and I cuddle up together and read to the last issue of Nextwave. *sniff sniff*

Wayne Beamer’s Pick of the Week

Because Ms. CEO likes comics a little bit… I’ll probably give her the Snakewoman Extended Collection #1, because she likes Shekhar Kapur’s Elizabeth…

And I’ll be looking for V-Day inspiration from The Devil’s Panties #9

Tongue-firmly-in-cheek on this one…

Carla Hewitt’s Pick of the Week

Really, Wayne…. aren’t we all?

Warren Ellis’s love letter to kicking and explosions ends with the final issue of Nextwave, #12. Remember friends you’ve hooked on this book and make sure they get their last copy. And as far as valentines go, I bought my man a copy of Frank Miller’s 300, because he likes meat and fixing cars, cooking outdoors and professional wrestling.

So what are your plans for Comic Valentine’s Day? Post your picks!

Top of my list has to be Justice Society #3. Close tie for 2nd would be Astonishing Xmen #20 and Thunderbolts #11.

  2. kilmoonie Says:

Yes, yes we all love Nextwave but it’s time for some variety. I’ll take Ellis’ other book this week, Thunderbolts #111. Also intriguing is the continuing Batman/Red Hood story in Green Arrow #71, the fun romp of Dr. 13 in Tales of the Unexpected #5 and the Dan Slott 4th Parallel story continues to deliver in JLA Classified #34.

Valentine’s Day agenda is set. My wife has two dozen roses and her favorite chocolates from the Ye Olde Pepper Companie in Salem, MA, America’s oldest and first candy company.
